Tonight will be the first time Randy returns to Anaheim since getting fired by the Ducks 2 seasons ago. The Leafs have played the Ducks once, a 4-2 victory for the good guys at home, but this marks the first time Randy's back to the place he hoisted the cup.

Another win tonight won't be an easy task though, as the Ducks are a top team this year. They are on pace to a 120 points season, second only to St.Louis in the entire league. They lost their last 2 games in OT, but have won 3 in a row prior to that.

They are better than us offensively, defensively and special teams. It will be a tough game, but a good measuring stick on where the leafs sit vs. the best teams in the league.

Let's hope our 1st line comes to life tonight, and Bernier stands on his head ... we'll need both.

Go Leafs!!!

This is actually a great rink to watch a game if you ever get a chance. Of course, the quack, quack, quack chant kinda threw me off.

I'm guessing Randy has a pretty good gameplan against the Ducks...we'll see how it goes. Kessel and Van Riemsdyk look a little out of gas, so I hope Randy is careful with the icetime on this trip.

Ducks haven't been the unbeatable first half ducks recently. 4-4-2 in their last 10, 7-6-2 in their last 15. Coming back down to earth a bit and definitely beatable.

Yeah, agreed. The strength of our prospect cupboard is how many guys we have coming up that look to have the potential to be effective 3rd and 4th line guys. There's no need for Orr, McLaren.

Good news is, as stubborn as Carlyle is, he will NOT put Orr or McLaren in the lineup.

Still, it'd be stupid to play Orr or McLaren tonight.

I kinda liked how he played 7 dmen, get Ranger into the lineup (BTW he was playing very well) and double-shift 1 of Kessel, Lupul or Bozak to make up the 12 forwards.

Bodie played great, he should continue to play on the 3rd line. And that is who would take Clarkson's spot. No need to put McLaren or Orr back in the lineup.

Vs. the Flyers, yeah maybe I can at least understand why he thinks there might be fireworks. The Ducks? There's no animosity between the 2 clubs that don't even play each other once every year.

weird, even though they don't need him, they just officially used their 2nd last callup of the year on McLaren....just for him to sit in the press box tonight.

Clarkson and Orr are both in.

For now Clarkson is line rushing with the 3rd line, Bodie with the 4th. We'll see how long that lasts.

They called him up as an emergency recall. They were eligible to do so, since they had fewer than 12 healthy forwards on the roster with Clarkson and Orr were injured. I'm not sure that will actually count against the four post-deadline call-ups we're allowed.

I can't go a single game without spotting a fvckup by Franson. Like how we hemmed in the Ducks for about a minute and a half - until Franson got the puck.

Nah, I disagree.
I can't go a single game without spotting a fvckup by Franson. Like how we hemmed in the Ducks for about a minute and a half - until Franson got the puck.
With Gardiner, he can string together a couple of good games before he fvcks up, and even then, he recovers from his mistakes more often than not.
I'm not defending Franson. He sucks

Ha, it's almost like Bernier was intentionally rubbing it in to Mirtle in the post-game:

Kevin McGran @kevin_mcgran
Bernier: "We blocked a lot of shots tonight, that made a huge difference. Guys were there with good sticks."

One of the more impressive games all year by the Leafs, despite the shot total. Great win.

You know, they really did have some great sticks all night. Bozak especially, on several occasions. Not a good night for Merts.

Heh. Not too many teams ever get to trade away two top-10 goalies in the same season.

Well done Mike Gillis.

Great, great win by the buds.

- It was as dominating a game as we've played for a while - against a very good team in the Ducks too! So good that even local media is coming around to it ... TSN reported "Despite the 43 shots Bernier did not face too many real scoring chances in this win."

- Perry is a deceptive little rat though ... he was by far the most dangerous duck and created chances out of nothing. Still, I wish Dion and Gunnarson have played him better. It would have been better if they just play the body and forget about the puck.

- After a few shifts trying the Dion - Gleason pair as a shutdown unit in the past 2 games, Carlyle has stuck to Dion and Gunnar tonight. I love Gleason, especially how he stood up for Bernier taking on the bigger Maroon, but he's slowly regressed imo, making more mistakes than when he first came. He's still a very good acquisition, but he's slowly looking more like a #5 than a #4.

- Ranger, OTOH, has looked better and better every game. His reach, his size, his skating and now his hockey sense is coming back and he is just SO darn effective on the ice when he's in the zone. Combination of very good stick position, excellent body position and his size makes it tough to beat. He could very well be an effective #4, or even #3 in the playoff. Don't forget he was an effective #4 on a good TB team before he left the NHL.

- Raymond reminds us why VAN let him walk again ... he's good for a 3rd line signing but plays like last night, when he had the puck on the stick, with Kessel driving the net, and his dman Reilly pinching and driving hard to the net you HAVE TO get the puck on net. Instead he hand on to it hang on to it, until he finally lost it and started a breakaway, the bozak had to take a too many men penalty to break it up. It's just over handling the puck and not reading the situation correctly.

- Despite Bernier didn't have to make too many tough saves, you can tell his players trust him and were comfortable taking chances knowing even a breakaway doesn't = automatic goal against. It is amazing we found a top 10 goalie (top 3 actually) in the league by giving up virtually nothing. It sure ease the pain we gave up Rask also for nothing.

- I think Clarkson had a good game. I know many will not agree with me, but he was effective in the cycle, and with the big tough Ducks winning board battles against Lupul, Kadri, even Kulemin, Clarkson was the one consistently going into the corner and coming up with the puck. HE did not create any real chances, but he cycled the puck effectively with Holland and Bodie, and I also love how he fought the guy for blind-siding Gardiner. These things glue a team together.

That was a great game by the Leafs. People will point to the shots, but when the game was close the Leafs actually led in Fenwick (56.3%). Anaheim only really started to take off after the Leafs 3rd goal. But even then, the Leafs did a great job of keeping most things to the outside, and limiting second chances. It was a great third period protecting the lead.

And our top line went up against their top line all night and won the battle pretty decisively. Before the game Perry called the Kessel line the best line in the NHL and they sure looked like it. Kessel needs only 6 goals and 17 points in the last 16 games for 40 goals and 90 points now.

Ranger also played a really stong game. Not just defensively sound, but he was obviously jumping up offensively, and was aggressive with his gap control and very tough to beat all night. If he can play like that it solidifies our D. That would be a nice late season surprise. And Rielly just keeps getting better and better. He is just so smart and consistently makes the right play with the puck.

Oh and for Mirtle... Bozak >

Yeah, Ranger's resurgence has been a really pleasant surprise. His turn-around and the addition of Gleason have done wonders for our back-end.

I'm also loving the 7 defenseman/11 forward system Carlyle's been running with, and hope he sticks with it. It's taken a lot of pressure off our young defensemen and Cody Franson, and it also allows a guy like Gleason to be as agressive as he wants without worrying about putting the team down to only five defensemen. With the amount our fourth line plays, a seventh defensemen is also infinitely more valuable than a fourth line winger, especially when we're rotating wingers from our other lines in and out of that open spot.

I still would like to see this T.J. Brennan get a shot with the Leafs, he is tearing up the AHL. Certainly Franson could do with a sit down, cannot see how Brennan can be any worse than Franson defensively. Imagine having three defensive guys, three offensive and one(Ranger) who is part of both.

Additionally, Bernier has to be considered the MVP of the team, as the team has played rather inconsistently all season long and he has continued to do what is necessary to keep the team from diving in the standing. Of course, right behind him is JVR and Kessel.

Having Ranger and Clarkson looking like they might be getting comfortable finally in a tough town to play in, coupled with the typical late season surge by Gardiner could make this team quite horrible to play against in the playoffs.

If last years Lupul suddenly shows up, well this team could do something no one, was really whispering or talking about last year or this year. Go DEEP.

I'd love to see Brennan get a shot in the NHL too, but it's been his bad luck that the Leafs haven't suffered a single injury all season to anyone in their top-7 on defense. I wish they'd just call him up and give him a shot on the wing, but if that's not in the cards, he's just going to have to continue to bide his time. We can't afford to burn one of our remaining two call-ups to bring up a defenseman when we've already got seven healthy defensemen on the NHL roster.

Yes good point. But, Franson apart from Clarkson's nervous and jangled season has to qualify as extremely disappointing. I think Clarkson is starting to emerge and show why Edmonton and the Leafs offered him so much money. Franson, just seems lost, and might be still rankled over his treatment in the offseason. However, perhaps his agent should suggest to him now might be a good time to be that guy that played against Boston.

Yeah, Franson's been terrible this year, no doubt.

Even if he does turn it around at this point, it may be too late to keep him in a Leaf uniform past this year. I doubt Nonis will see much point in going through another difficult contract negotiation with him when he's got Rielly, Gardiner and Phaneuf as his other puck-movers already on the roster, and guys like Matt Finn, Stuart Percy and TJ Brennan in the system.

Would be too bad to see Brennan get a shot somewhere else next year without ever giving him a look.

EDIT: Nevermind he is an RFA.

Yep. After the season he's had in the AHL, I don't think there's any way Nonis doesn't qualify him and bring him back for a shot at a roster spot in camp next year.

Yet another reason why Franson is likely a goner.

Especially with how Spott raves about him.

I am sure he's the first guy to get a shot whenever there is an injury.

Economically you are dead on. Better to get someone young and cheap. This Ranger when you break down his skill set, has a really nice package of size, skating, shot and when he is turned on, good to very good defence. Just a huge addition at the right time. And Gardiner, well, he has been very similar to last year, spotty with glimses of extreme magic, if this guy turns it on around playoff time he can be a significant factor. Still has a package that not many ever have had. Just seems to have a bit of a head problem.

ranger made two really brutal blunders with the puck in the second half of the third but otherwise played a great game.

as for brennan, he's in a tough spot because of the team's depth on the blueline. he also doesn't really bring the sort of skillset they need.

but, he is having a pretty spectacular year.

leafman101

Yeah, Brennan might not bring anything they need, and he might not even be an NHLer, but it would be a shame to not get a look at him with how well he is playing.

Guys like kesler, edler, hamhuis, hamonic, myers, eberle, campbell, staal, weber, could be available.

If Weber is even within the realm of possibility, that is EXACTLY what we're missing.

And then sign a guy like Vanek, dump a couple of contracts, and go with youth on the bottom 6 and we are in big time business.
