Aww man ... my Villa managed to draw the only lower league team I actually care about in Leyton Orient.

I just noticed what the censorbot did to Reading's opponent. It's Scun thorpe United. :wink

Wait, what? How does that make any sense?

Why would relegated teams get a bye?

I went back to a few prior years. The teams that finish 18th and 19th get a bye to the 2nd round. Only the team finishing 20th has to play in the first round. Last year, Wigan got a bye to the 3rd round because they were playing in the Europa League, even though they had been relegated. Reading got the other bye and QPR had to play in the first round because they finsished last in 2012-13.

A few upsets today, with 4 Prem teams losing and West Brom needing 9 rounds of penalties beat League 2 Oxford United 7-6 after playing to a 1-1 draw:

West Ham 1-1 Sheffield United - League 1 Sheffield win on penalties 5-4
Leicester 0-1 Shrewsbury Town - Shrewsbury town are 6th in League 2 after being relegated last year
Burnley 0-1 Sheffield Wednesday
MK Dons 4-0 Man U

Has Man U hit bottom yet? Can Di Maria change his mind? DeGea started in goal and other players looking for regular first team time...Kagawa, Anderson, Chicharito, Welbeck also started. But a couple others made their first team debut, including a defender.

There was massive ugliness on social media yesterday swirling around that Man United result. Frankly, as a guy who's not a fan, it was fun to watch. But for United supporters it was another story I'm sure.

Yeah... one interesting blog remark that this could be a good thing in the eyes of old-time Man U supporters in that it might drive the newbies away. Sort of like the revolution eating its offspring. Entertaining, indeed.

Today's results:

Aston Villa 0-1 Leyton Orient
Birmingham City 0-3 Sunderland
Bradford City 2-1 Leeds United
Burton Albion 1-0 QPR
Stoke 3-0 Portsmouth

So 6 Premier League teams go down in their first round.

Round 3 draw, to be played the week of 9/22

Chelsea v. Bolton
Arsenal v. Southampton
West Brom v. Hull
Crystal Palace v. Newcastle
Leyton Orient v. Sheffield United
Cardiff v. Bournemouth
Sunderland v. Stoke
Derby County v. Reading
Liverpool v. Middlesbrough
MK Dons v. Bradford City
Man City v. Sheffield Wednesday
Burton Albion v. Brighton & Hove Albion
Swansea v. Everton
Shrewsbury Town v. Norwich
Fulham v. Doncaster
Spurs v. Nottingham Forest

Aston Villa 0-1 Leyton Orient

That result has the dogs howling for Lambert's head at Villa. He managed to crap out of this Cup at first opportunity two years in a row. And based on what I heard on radio, they played like they really didn't care that much aside from young Jack Grealish.

Didn't take long for Leeds United to sack their manager following their pathetic start to the season

Leeds United manager Dave Hockaday has been sacked after only six games in charge of the Championship club.

Assistant manager Junior Lewis has also been dismissed, with Neil Redfearn taking over until a permanent replacement is appointed.

Hockaday out at Leeds after League Cup exit

For now, Lambert's strong start to the EPL season has the wolves at bay. But let's be realistic here ... their first three games were against less than stellar opposition. Let's see what it looks like in Birmingham at the beginning of November when they've run through Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea, City, Everton, QPR and Tottenham. Wouldn't shock me if they only gain 3-4 points out of that mess after starting with 7 from their first three.
