How many think the Isles are contenders in the East this year?

zeke
10-17-2014, 01:29 PM
really depends on whether their kids are as good as they look so far - Nelson, Strome, Leddy, Hamonic in particular.

Habspatrol

And Halak.

I think Isles will crash back down, may be a playoff bubble team but don't seem them keeping it up

zeke

well, I think we know what Halak is. decent average goalie.

...which is a nice upgrade over what they had in previous years.

Thanks Zeke.

How many think the Isles are contenders in the East this year?

Nope. Blueline isn't very good, forward depth probably isn't very good...though, as Zeke mentioned, they do have some kids who could potentially fill those roles.

Should be a bubble team.

Montana

I'd bet heavy on the over for the Islanders in Vegas....believe their over/under was something like 82 points.

And Halak.

Yep, definitely Halak. He has not proven that he can should 65-70 games and he will need to for them to be a contender.

LeafGm
10-18-2014, 11:03 AM
The Islanders won't be a contender, but they'll be in the hunt for a playoff spot. Let's not forget that they made the playoffs in the lockout-shortened season, and took the Pittsburgh Penguins to game seven in round one. And I'd say that this Islanders team is better than that one.

As for Halak, I don't think he has to be elite. Even if he can deliver NHL-average goaltending to the Isles, he'll be a significant upgrade over the Nabokov/Poulin/Nilsson shit-show from last season.

Montana
10-18-2014, 04:18 PM
Few #1 goalies shoulder 65-70 starts anymore (only one goalie played in 65 last year, for instance)......and Halak has years of 63, 57, and 52 games played under his belt, with SV%'s over .920 in two of those three years. (also has a year of .926 in 46gp)

He's shown he can be a #1......if he gives the Isles .920+ over 55-60 games, they'll be a pretty damn solid team.

It is true though that they finally have some competent scoring. They've been lacking that for years.

We win our next game and we're in the Boston/NYR/CBJ/STL region, not catastrophic yet. Far from ideal too, but it's not as though a poor start precludes you from any future success. After all we started last season great, and we saw how that turned out.

Definitely some signs that their record is inflated. The goal differential doesn't scare me too much since it that 7-1 loss really skews the numbers in such a small sample size.

last year they finished in line with their goal differential, though the shot-based metrics didn't think they were nearly as good as that. Lights out goaltening helped.

this year they have played very similarly to how they played last year, with a little less goals for/against luck, and with lesser goaltending as well......but have still somehow ended up with a great record.

I'd assume the record would level out eventually - at least down to last year's level, and with a good chance of falling below that.

last year they finished in line with their goal differential, though the shot-based metrics didn't think they were nearly as good as that.

Yeah I definitely don't expect them to continue anything near .800 hockey. I expect something similar to the previous 2 seasons. In that 100 point range.

If Bernier "remembers" that he's Jon Bernier...he'll remain a .920 goalie. Reimer being "just" Reimer is still a .915ish goalie.

I don't think you really thought this line of argument out, Councillor.

Be honest, how many games have you watched? If you only watched last night and the TBay game then I understand why you'd feel that way.

Their goal differential is ugly mostly based on 2 games that they played horribly. Those games obviously count but they definitely skew the numbers when we're talking about such a small sample of games.

I've watched 3 of their games -- Leafs, Bruins, Flames. In each game, they were dominated in the first period and looked incredibly weak defensively. With the exception of the Leafs and Bruins games, they've relied on goaltending in their wins. You won the Leafs game on a lucky bounce and Rask did his sieve thing with your team in the Boston game.

They look like a team that will need to rely on its offensive talent and goaltending to win games. Kinda like the Leafs last year.

Yeah I never once said their record was sustainable. Coming into the year I expected them to be a 100ish point team and I still do. Though they've played like shit for the past few games.

I can't stand Therrien. He's sitting Sekac who has shown speed and offensive ability and he's playing plugs like Moen and Prust... and guys like Bourque and Eller who aren't producing at all. Plus he's playing Galchenyuk who's probably already our best forward 12-13 minutes a night.

JackBurton
11-04-2014, 11:28 AM
The problem with the Habs is, who replaces Therrien? They have by far the smallest pool of coaches to chose from. I guess Guy Boucher gets the job as he is the only candidate.

Their record is very good given how they've played. So Therrien is going nowhere.

Yeah I never once said their record was sustainable. Coming into the year I expected them to be a 100ish point team and I still do.

But why, really?

Sure they got 100pts last year, but that's with a 6-3 shootout record and only a +11 goal differential. Their shot differential was even less impressive at -2.6. Their offense seemed un-flukily below average - 24th in shots, 21st in goals, and their legit goaltending covered for a sub par defense - 22nd in shots against, 3rd in sv%, 8th in goals against. Their special teams were quite good and possibly sustainable (11th PP, 4th pk) but no guarantees there.

It would seem that everything pointed to at least a moderate overachievement last year. The expectation probably should be to fall back a bit this year, especially since there were no substantial upgrades to the roster, and that the team isn't especially young.

The way I see it, our team hasn't drastically changed in the last couple years, and is not an old roster, so I don't see why we wouldn't end up around the same mark. It could be 95, it could be 105. Yes, we got saved by good goaltending. But our team is built around that. It will kick us in the nuts some years, but other years we'll come out on top. Habs are brutal right now.

As for the hit... I found it really odd and can't quite put my finger on it. It seemed like he didn't hit him all that hard but then Zadorov went flying into the boards harder than he should have it seems.

Also, Sekac was engaged with another player the whole time and as he goes to throw the hit Zadorov spins in the opposite direction.

All that said, I would not have argued if they gave him 5 minutes, but I don't expect a suspension or anything.

Zadorov barely spun at all. His numbers were mostly facing Sekac the entire time.

This is an example of a player spinning and putting himself at risk...

And Cork, try to ignore the jersey colors and watch this again. Just before the camera angle changes at the 11 second mark his shoulder is facing Sekac and it looks like he's going to play the puck to his right, then he reverses and that's when the hit happens.

I guarantee there will be no fine or suspension.

If you don't see the guy clearly turn away from the hit then I really don't know what to tell you. The video is there for everyone to make up their own mind.

His back is to the play the entire time, he turns slightly to stop, then continues his original path. There is no significant turn at all.

High hit. No let up. Player cut. That's a 5 minute major in the NHL.

Only reason he get's hit from behind at all is his decision to backhand the puck instead of playing it on the forehand. If he plays it on the forehand like it looked like he was going to originally, his momentum makes it a straight on hit with no penalty. He put himself in danger to the fore-checker once he backhanded it. Shitty outcome, but no idea how you blame Sekac on it, he's just forechecking hard like he's supposed to.

Yeah... back was to Sekac the whole time. :rolleyes(2):

You screen grabbed the 1 second he twists to stop.

Look, I don't think its a hit that should garner a suspension, or a fine. But if the Boro hit is a 5 minute major, and the Gryba hit is too, then Sekac should be given the same treatment.

It's - Montreal typical...

I posted screen shots of the video leading up to the hit. It shows his shoulder facing Sekac. Of course in the few seconds before that his back was to Sekac.... you can't skate sideways. He had to be skating towards the puck in order to get there... that's physics.

If the NHL wants to start punishing players for hitting guys even though they turned at the last moment then fine, but as the rules stand, that's not a punishable hit.

The hit on Boro was a blown call.

Habspatrol

Well it's official. No hearing for Sekac. Not even a fine.

That's the term that the Habs board uses for anything outside of the score board.

Bottom line is that the Habs are on their 3rd straight season of getting "lucky." At some point the predictive stats become meaningless when a team keeps winning.

Always really blown away by this anytime I visit your board.

Just want an even application of the rules.

Do you want them to get the calls right or do you want all called incorrectly because some are called incorrectly?

Cause either way you're out of luck. It's a fast game, there are going to be inconsistencies.

Not a dirty hit. It looked bad when it happened. But the evidence proves otherwise. Good job, HP.

your argument would have more merit if we weren't the 2nd or 3rd most penalized team to date in terms of minor penalties

Question: Why are you doing the top 8....

If the standings finished the way you have them... Florida would miss the playoffs as the Capitals would take the #3 spot in the Metro division, and the Bruins/Sens would be the wild cards.

Why not do "the Real Standings" by division/wildcards as the NHL is now doing it?

That'd be a real pain in the ass to update every day, IMO. And I'm not sure it's necessary.

I think the idea of "the REAL Standings" is to show which teams have performed the best to date. Not so much to predict playoff seeding or anything like that.

yeah that is true ;)

at the end of the day, an eastern team only has to beat one western team in the post season so the crying that the west is so tough compared to the east is meaningless for the most part when you are a fan of an eastern team.

Real Standings if we turn all shootout results into ties:

PIT: 112 (+24)
TBL: 108 (+18)
MTL: 103 (+0)
NYI: 98 (+7)
TOR: 94 (+5)
OTT: 91 (+3)
BOS: 90 (+1)
FLA: 87 (-5)
----------
NYR: 86 (+2)
WSH: 82 (+3)
NJD: 78 (-7)
PHI: 78 (-1)
CAR: 62 (-12)
CBJ: 57 (-22)
BUF: 47 (-35)

not only is montreal benefitting from their 4-0 shootout record (same as NYI), but they (along with FLA) seem to be unsustainably outperforming their actual on ice performance as well.

Just want to mention it once every few years;

I love this thread zeke, appreciate how you've kept at it. It just hit me that the first thing I do every single day on my first trip to the site is to scroll over the REAL standings.
Sometimes weeks will go before I see the actual standings, but I always know where we'll finish.

you do love playing with numbers don't you.

Just two weeks ago, you had given up on the Leafs, now I suspect you have them parading down Yonge with Stanley.

Shootouts count. We are 4-1, hardly earth shattering and 5-2 overall in OT. Again, hardly earth shattering.

All that matters is that we have more points.

I'm not a big "Corsi guy" but I don't believe that statement is true. What Kessel does "prove" is that you can still produce very well without being a big time "possession" forward. His Corsi numbers appear to be the very definition of average.

According to Hab fans they have no talent, just goaltending (which has been weaker than normal this season).

However, we continue to win - go figure.

They other I posted that I am not scared of any of the teams in the East. After last night, I have to say I am definitely scared of the Detroit Red Wings. Luckily they don't have the scoring talent depth in likes of Kessel/JVR but man they play a beautifully controlled brand of hockey. I don't think they are talented enough to win it all but they are good.

I think it's time for a money phone photo, ME.

THIS. Come on ME. You can do a combo. One armed push up, with cash on your back and talking on the money phone with another hand.

1 armed push up? Never on my best day man.

As for the money phone stacks, I'd have to sub that shit out for financial statements, which doesn't have nearly the visual appeal.

A Hab fan calling the Leafs weak on paper is pretty amusing.

Leaf forwards >> Hab forwards
Leaf defensemen = Hab defensemen
Leaf goaltending < Hab goaltending

Yeah, they aren't the most talented team out there, but if the Leafs actually make it into the playoffs, the Wings would be the last team I'd want to face. They're highly disciplined, and the version of hockey they play is pretty much idealy suited to shutting the Leafs down.

oh they have the scoring depth.

top 3: dats, zetts, franzen - the old guys are still awesome. the only question is health and stamina.
2nd 3: sheahan, tatar, nyquist - the young guys aren't star talents but they are quality second line producers
3rd 3: helm, abdelkader, weiss/jurco - solid underrated third line producers

of course, the depth does stop on a dime there, unless mantha takes a big step forward in the ahl, so they're in a bit of trouble if the old guys have more health issues.

So you're saying better offense vs better defense/goaltending.

Make sense. I mean you guys did manage to take 3 of 4 points from Detroit by scoring two regulation goals.

Yep
More money than you make and 26 weeks off. Yeah, you probably do.

What do you do with the 26 weeks off? Working on a screenplay?

When I'm out west I work about 95 hours a week. So catch up on sleep, catch up on life, etc.

You summed it all up and then made a sarcastic comment so I was wondering if you disagreed or not.

The Leafs = Offense, Habs = Defense statements?

Well really it's irrelevant as I am contractually obligated to dispute a minimum of 90% of zeke's posts regardless of veracity.

It can be. I moved my SO in from Mexico instead....

On the upside, that's where I'm spending half of my winter this year.

we've played four games vs detroit this year.

TOR: 2-1-1, 7gf/8ga

MTL vs. Tor convo's happen every year when Toronto goes a little streak.

A month later MTL pulls away.

Toronto misses the playoffs.

MTL loses in the second or third round.

Rinse. Repeat.
