So, quick recap ... what happened over the past 7 days or so?

On Sat we lost in a disgusting manner to the Bruins, where they walked completely over us and brought out the very worst of the team - bad enough for the team to call a players only meeting after the loss in game #8 of the season.

And on Tue night, we happened to play the very, very poor Sabres and completely dominated them in an equally disgusting manner (but their fans are probably happy cause they are another game closer to McDavid).

Which lead us to this weekend. Between the Bruins and the Sabres we went through what was a very bad, and then a very good game, but the Sabres are so bad we can't possibly use them as the measuring stick. So that's why the weekend games vs. the CBJ's and the Hawks would give management and the fans some ideas of where this team is.

And what about the CBJ? They are not exactly a power house and they're suffering from serious injuries at the moment ... the thing is, CBJ beat the Leafs in all 3 meetings last season, so there's something on the line. The BJ's were also a playoff team - something that we weren't. The BJ's are also only 1 point behind us in standing, and a loss by the Leafs tonight would push us 1 position down in the eastern basement (and only 3 points above the very, very bad Sabres) so this game DOES matter.

Or so I hope, to the players.

Bernie's starting tonight.

Kind of a sign of weakness by Randy, IMO.

number17
10-31-2014, 04:08 PM
So Bernier starts tonight and Reimer starts tomorrow?? Weird ... Bernier got the start vs. BOS and BUF, so I presumed he's the #1 again ... between CBJ and CHI I'd start the #1 vs. CHI, especially given Bernier has played more games in the West vs. Chicago ....

It doesn't make a huge difference anyways, and I'd rather we start Reimer vs. CHI, but if Carlyle believes in Reimer as the better goalie of the 2, why did he start Bernier against BOS on Sat and again on Tue?

zeke
10-31-2014, 04:12 PM
its a bit like he's more worried about locking down these two points tonight, and doesn't fancy his chances against CHI even with Bernie in net.

Montana

If I had to guess, I'd say it's probably a conspiracy against Reimer.

Clearly setting him up to fail, whilst giving bernie the cushy starts.

Leafyblue
10-31-2014, 04:45 PM
It doesn't matter who they put in net...the Leafs need to win games that have nothing to do with our goaltender standing on his head....you know...like last year.

LeafGm
10-31-2014, 04:52 PM
I'm sort of past the whole Reimer vs. Bernier thing...Bernier is clearly our starting goalie, now and going forward.

As for starting Bernier tonight and giving Reimer the game agains the Hawks...do we even know for sure that it will be Reimer getting the start against Chicago tomorrow? In the last 12 days, the Leafs have only played three games---and Bernier didn't even have to break a sweat in the game against Buffalo. It's totally possible Bernie could be getting both starts this weekend.

Sooner or later the goals are going to come for Naz and Lupul. It's been ridiculous how little reward they've had for their overall great play.

They better not let this sieve look like a vezina candidate. At the same time, hope Bernie can string a few good games together ... been bumpy so far.

Randy will no doubt revert to his stupidity at the first sign of trouble. Let's hope the Leafs come out strong.

Huh? Where did you hear this!?

And yeah, if any of our top 6 goes down to injury it's gonna kinda suck that we could've brought Nylander up from the Marlies. Especially since we're already kinda short a legit top 6 guy when healthy.

Grow balls and make a trade Nonis. You kind of have to expect Lupul to go down once a month or so. Need another top-six forward, otherwise this team is in a whirlwind of trouble.

Don't worry, you're not.

Maple Leaf fans have always been ridiculous about their top defenders. This is the city that ran Larry Murphy and Bryan McCabe out of town. I'm sure they'll find a way to run Phaneuf out of town at some point too, who will then develop an entirely different reputation within half a season away from the cynical jackasses who follow this club.

These lines are so much more balanced. Better board play and we look decent defensively too. That first line will struggle to get chances now that Lupul is out(wanted him on there for a reason) but hopefully they'll do enough. If we play like this 1-0, 2-1 games will be fun.

As for Clarkson doing better. It's funny because it's nothing special that he does really. He works better with players who are about hanging on to the puck along the wall...If you pay close attention he still messes up on simple stuff like missing easy passes, misses the net from close in, etc...but as long as he's trying i don't care. Just win!

so who gets called up? leivo? carrick?

Hard to call up either with their slow starts. Maybe Abbot? Connor Brown?

More likely, Bodie.

What's it gonna take for these dummies to waive Frattin? He didn't even deserve to make the team. In limited ice time Ashton was way better. Bring up anyone and just waive him. He'd do well to keep his head above water in the ECHL.

Out of curiosity, what was Corsi close like tonight?

56% for us.

Wow, the Marlies as a team have been ridiculously low-scoring this year.

Nine goals in seven games. Victor Loov, with 2 goals, is the only player with more than 1 goal. I'd still like to see one of Connor Brown or Leivo get the call. But yeah, it probably will be Bodie. Or maybe Trevor Smith.

its coming as soon as we're healthy. ashton was far better than him tonight, and plays a fourth line style game.

Damn. It'd be really nice to be able to call up Nylander right now.

Ryan Johansen is a sick player.

One thing i'll say, I;m shocked he's looked so fantastic after missing all of training camp. Most of the time that's a recipe for having a disappointing season. Dude has looked like he did not miss a step. I left him out of my pool because I thought he'd stink missing so much,

Nice game. It's funny, I didn't think the Kadri line was particularly good tonight, but really opportunistic with some nice finish. Vintage Phil. The 'top line' without Phil had a really strong game for the most part. CBJ broadcast was really loving Polak and Robidas, talking about what great adds they are. And Ashton >>>> Frattin, hopefully he stays in the lineup. I've noticed we're really clogging up the neutral zone a lot more efficiently and closing on players really quick, taking away time and space. Will be interesting to see how they handle the Hawks.

Bernier was solid although made a few plays into adventures. Clarkson 2.0 is really growing on me too, where the hell was this guy last year?

I love that Kessel stat. 5-0 when he scores. 0-4-1 when he does not.

You don't build around him. When he isn't scoring, he does nothing!

Is this being serious?

... you just get more players like Phil so in the other games, someone else scores.

:shrug

Edit: I'm thinking my sarcasm meter was just experiencing technical difficulties.

Have I ever mentioned that I despise Carlyle?

Mark Masters ‏@markhmasters

Carlyle on Kadri calling Winnik "responsible": "Probably Nazzy's thanking him, because he's saved his butt so many times"

Such a total douche. They can't can this guy soon enough.
