Mod Squad
See if my luck with GDT can turn the buds back in the right direction.
After the 'turtle start' (in Carlyle's term) and the 3-2 loss to the Coyotes that started off the western swing, the Leafs are back at it tonight vs. the Aves, and face a team with similar consistency issues as us.
Aves have lost 3 in a row and only won once in the past 6. Roy's team has not looked good at all.
The Aves made the playoff last year, but with an extremely high shooting percentage, winning a lot of shootouts and a lot of 1-goal games ... which many experts deemed unsustainable and regarded it a 'lucky season' for the rookie coach in Roy and his team. Surely the Aves have taken a step back thus far this season, and in particular, failed to pick up points in shootout, which gave them so many bonus points last year. Roy said "We need to score and put the puck in the net." .... and it's probably this great insight that got him the Jack Adams but at the moment it doesn't seem to be helping the Aves.
On our side, we need to get back on the horse and start winning some games. The 3-2 loss was a setback after the 3-games winning streak, what is interesting tonight, and things to watch out for are:
- Will Carlyle stick with the Kadri-Kessel combo still? Or will he revert to Bozak-Kessel for most of the game?
- Kadri got very little icetime when Carlyle leaned on Bozak, Kessel, JVR, Clarkson and Winnik. Even Holland got more icetime last game ... will that continue tonight?
- To reward for his excellent start on Sat vs. the Hawks, Reimer was given the Coyotes start, and didn't look nearly as solid in the loss. Bernier will most likely get the start tonight ... what will he do with it?
- Gardiner looked particularly bad (again) on Tue and Percy is along on the trip. Will he get a start?
Last time the Aves were in town we edged them 3-2 in OT ... let's hope we can extend their losing streak tonight!
