Due to heart attack, He was still the head of expediency council and had the meeting few hours before his death, twice president of Iran, 3 times head of parliament, key figure to force Khomeini to accept Saddam's ceasefire agreement for peace after 8 years of war(Khomeini had this slogan, war war until victory and didn't want hear anything about the peace with Saddam).

He changed strategy in last 10 years and wasn't on the same page with Khamenei, even though non of them publicly admitted that and both considered each others on public at least as friends of over 60 years.and became reformist, he was the main supporter of Hasan Rouhani and main reason why he got so many votes.

He was a top three figure of IR in last 4 decades.
He wanted to change Iran toward democracy however he failed to see that the reason for his inability to reform the system were the lawlessness, the corruption, killing and dictatorship that he himself for so many years had fostered on his way to gain power.
For me they are all the same but at least he realized some of his $hits late in his life

That is only positive of him maybe, and the main reason was Iran was losing the war badly, because Iraq was supported from right and left and Iran had only some half a$$ Russian war equipment, but yes convincing that hard head Khomeini, it was only Rafsanjani who could do it at that time.

He also made Khamenei the guide(most powerful person), hoping one day he will replace him, never ever thought Khamenei can become this powerful. 30 years later, he is still running the country..

He is also reported to be one of the world's richest man back to 90s and 2000.

That is the video when he made Khamenei The guide 30 years a go, few days after Khomeini's death, the video is in Persian(forward to minutes 1:00), when he said Khomeini didn't believe to have Leadership council(instead of one person), i asked him we don't have anyone to replace you, he said why you say that, there is Mr Khamenei.

Then he mentioned whoever who agree with what our RIP guide Khomeini said, please stand, lol, and obviously who could disagree with what Khomeni said. in 5 minutes he made Khamenei the guide, Khamenei himself as you can see at the end of video is shocked lol

He mentioned Khomeni's son, Ahmad, was also in that meeting when Khomeini talked about Khamenei as his future replacement, so it was kind of agreement between him and Khomeini's son(Ahmad) to make Khamenei the guide and later on get rid of him.
Few years after that Ahmad Khomeini died mysteriously, as he was in opposition of Khamenei and rumors is they got rid of him as he wanted to have the power himself...
