Around the NHL 2016-2017

guess you don't pay any attention to the NBA
That's the thing, if the salary cap upper limit keeps jumping by leaps and bounds every year, then you might see more NHL stars taking short-term deals.

But with the present economics in the NHL, I can't really see that becoming a thing.

I don't think the injury risk is remotely comparable in the NBA either.

How often do basketball players get concussed, or have their Achilles get sliced by a skate, or even just get pummeled with punches to the face?

I'd be much more confident taking a short term deal in the NBA.

Google "Paul George broken leg" if you're wondering about that.

Also see the careers of Tracy McGrady, Derrick Rose, Gilbert Arenas, Yao Ming, Greg Oden, Brandon Roy.

The NBA loses a huge amount of their elite talent to career limiting or ending injuries.

Aside from thatbeing really misleading (routine nhl injuries can be devastating to a basketball player) the avg retirement age in tbe nba is a few yrs younger than the nhl.

I googled Steven Stamkos broken leg instead.

There's no question about the heightened injury risk in the NHL. Of course NBA players get injured, but the punishment that an NHL body takes is unmatched in pro sports, with the exception of the NFL where the intent is to actually murder people.

Stop.

Yeah, they aren't the same thing. Trust me.

Yes, but there's a lot of injuries in the NHL that are fully recoverable. Blow your knee as a 26 yr old superstar in the NHL and you're at worst 95% of what you were when you return. As an NBA player though? Ask Derrick Rose. The guys was the league MVP just a few years ago (and looked like a potential generational level player), today he's a rotation player at 28 years old. You have a significant ankle or knee injury in the NBA and unless if that shit heals 100%, that's a wrap. It's over for you as a player of that calibre over any sort of time period.

You're too patient with this guy

It's more than a small it less. A guy like Keith will have left 30mn on the table bc of it.
You arent factoring in a 2-3 year deal at age 34. Likely worth 21-24 million (7-8 milliom for three years not unlikely with the raising cap).

The fact is signing term first he has more years guaranteed and his gamble is on the backend. You are asking him to gamble at year 4 instead of year 9

There are stump periods no matter what bc of the term limit.

But he'll do better overall signing a 7 or 8 yr deal at 29-30 rather than 27.

Plus a shirt term deal would permit a team to assume a much higher AAV putting.more $ in his pocket on tbe front end

A little bit of a change in topic for the moment (since this is the "around the NHL" thread)---any thoughts on how Justin Shultz is doing for the Penguins this year?

After last night 80's-style scoring fest against Washington where he picked up four points, he's now 5th in the league in defensive scoring, and to my uneducated eye, his possession numbers look pretty great. Considering the supposed high-price for top-4 right-handed defensemen, Pittsburgh's deal to acquire him for a 3rd round pick is quickly moving from "good trade" to "highway robbery".

Hell do better... if he stays healthy and productive for 3 years. The guarantees are better to sign 8 years now

Hes the #5 most used d on the pens. He also gets 0 pk time.

Pp specialist with great corsi numbers but keep in mind hes getting sheltered matchups.

Pretty sure the first time Letang was out he shouldered a lot of those minutes. And with Letang out again, wouldn't surprise me to see his usage increase.

Very very sheltered usage, allowing him to do what he does best - score points. His usage is by far the softest on the pens, and softer than a guy like Carrick's, and his possession numbers aren't near as good as Carrick's.

Even with that, on average this season his usage is extremely sheltered, and his average minutes are the 5th most on the team with almost 0 in PK time. He's just not good defensively.
