The Everything Auston Matthews thread

Toews on Matthews:

“For a guy that size he can move,” Toews said of Matthews. “He’s just got his head up and there’s not too many guys with that skill level that he has. Late in the game, we gave him one too many chances and he’s the type of player that’s going to make you pay. He’s good at kind of finding the soft areas.

“I think he does a lot of things similar to Kaner, the way he’s smart playing without the puck. Unfortunately, we couldn’t quite keep him off the scoresheet tonight. He got a big one for his team.”

Someone on HF compared Matthews demeanor to Tim Duncan. I thought that was pretty good.

Another FWIW post ...

Was reading some of a Matthews' thread over at HF and a few people (incl Zeke) were throwing around the best player in the league/world tag for him and at least one made a fair point about him perhaps being a more well rounded player than McD bc of his defensive abilities. Interesting stuff.

The Awesome One.

That would make Crosby the best player in the world.

Matthews is awesome though. As for him v McDavid... we'll see how the scoring plays out this year. If McDavid outscores him by 20+ points I'm not sure his defensive play makes up for that. But if it's close... then I think there's an argument for Matthews.

To me its becoming evident that this will be the Crosby/Ovie debate of the next generation. Both guys consistently do things that 99.9% of players can't do and make you say "what the **** was that." With McDavid its what he can do at top speed, and with Matthews its the hands. But both guys have skills that clearly separate them from everyone else.

Ultimately what decided the Crosby/Ovie debate was the winning. We will see.

Right now Crosby is still the best though IMO. Him or Karlsson.

Everybody declaring McDavid the new best in the world after last season seemed a little premature to me. Seems like they completely ignored that Crosby put up a 48g/97pt pace and the big difference was the 7 games he missed due to "concussion" (i.e. they wanted to give the guy a rest)

Yeah, Crosby is still the King, until he's dethroned.

In McDavid's case, one 100-point regular season, followed by a mediocre playoff run that culminated in a second round exit...that's not going to get the job done.

In Matthews' case, a 40-goal, 69-point rookie season, solid performance in a first round exit and strong start to the following season also isn't enough to seriously move him into contention.

At the moment, in fact, I think I'd still have Hot Karl ahead of both of them in the "best player in the league" discussion. But as leafman said, a lot of this debate is going to come down to winning. Both Karlsson & Crosby put their teams on their backs and carried them far, so let's see what those two do this year, and how far McDavid & Matthews can carry their teams.

I'm not going to base it entirely on team success, since a guy can try as hard as he can but if management has saddled him with chimps them I'm not going to fault him.

But it's way way too early to be annointing Matthews as the best player while McDavid and Crosby are playing at ~100 point paces, and it's not like either of them are chumps defensively either. And as well, with Karlsson being a nearly PPG defenseman over the past many years, he definitely belongs in those arguments. Matthews might get to that level, but he might not. Nothing wrong with being the #3 or #4 best player in the world.

Matthews, to me, is definitely a throw-back athlete.

His demeaner reminds me so much of Sundin - calm, quiet leader who just gets the job done. It's all business, and everyone gets to celebrate a win.

I mean I know mcdavid is good but I just don't know anymore - would I really want him here instead of the Matthews we've seen this year?

Auston Matthews has been named the NHL's Second Star of the Week for the week ending October 15. #TMLtalk

I see a fair bit of McDavid being in Alberta and all...and as much as I love Matthews, I don't know if this is a tree I would bark up. McDavid's IQ and ability to move the puck with speed is on a different level. With that said, Matthews is clearly bigger, strong and a better finisher, way more deadly from the dirty areas.

I think it's closer than most people would admit, but I don't think Matthews is on that level.
