GDT: Game #18 | Sabres vs. Canadiens | Nov. 11, 2017

Find a way to trade 31. That is why MB is paid a GM money and not me. Find A Way!! This is the key for the future!
Way too early. You have no idea if Lindgren will continue to be good.

I know that, i mean eventually. and if Lindgern shit the bed, then with 4-5 millions you can find plenty quality goalies off season. At the end worst come to the worst this team miss playoff this year. It is not like we have been a contender or won many cups in last 25 years.

Question should be -- are we good enough with Price or better off with Charlie and $9.5M in cap space?

Agreed that's the starting point to debate this . It could be Charlie or a vet .

Goaltending is superior now than decades ago . They are super athletic , bigger , and with their equipment cover much more net than before .

Cup winners haven't relied on a goalie to carry them since Roy and they don't have to be the highest paid on the team or even be in the top 5 in goalie player rankings among that group .

Elite talent with enough goaltending is all you need .

Problem is we haven't had enough talent for a decade and don't have the depth or asset capital to acquire it .

31 is injury prone and I think we milked every drop of that lemon's best years .

We aren't a 31 away from winning anything anytime soon and he has been outplayed in many playoff rounds .

Forget cap space or jr's debt levels , couldn't care less .

It's about winning and building for a cup , and it's not happening with this group and the soon to be albatross deal we just caved for on a team treading water for a decade .

You need a franchise goalie to win a cup. As a fan I don't care how long our goalie is signed for or at what price, all I care about is the next game and THIS season.. it's the GM's job to worry about that not mine.. we need a number 1 L d-man and another A center man and this club can do damage..

That's not as easy as you think.

There are quite a few teams that still have question marks in net they've been trying to fix for a couple of years.

In essence those would be the teams calling about Price

Do you? Doesn't seem to be the case anymore.

Looking at the franchise goalies right now, holtby, price, Lundqvist, rinne maybe, quick, and I see 2 cups.

What's your definition of a franchise goalie?

Well if that is the case then maybe 39 can fetch us a good return :)

Sorry man, i stopped reading the rest of your post. That is exactly kind of old school mentality which stopped this organisation to take any risk and move forward.

Of course Quick is a franchise goalie. The last decade pretty much every team that won the cup has had a franchise goalie. The Penguins had Fleury and Murray , both have proven they are, Hawks have Crawford, Kings have Quick, Bruins had Thomas . etc... Not one of these teams gambled with an average goalie... I know some are shaking their heads on say Crawford or Fleury, but the fact and results show that they are.. had a great talk with Duncan Keith last summer and he said to a man, every one on Hawks would say that they don't win without the play Crawford... yes franchise goalie's struggle at times, some even have bad seasons, shit Roy falls into having bad seasons.. it amazes me that people forget that...

Name me a team in the last 10 years that won a cup without a franchise goalie ?

10 years? I'd say Anti Niemi and Chris Osgood (although Osgood was quite good in the playoffs).

Anti would be an exception, why would the Hawks not keep him ? instead they went with Crawford.. Osgood is a franchise goalie imo for the reasons you state.. so 1 out of 10...in a decade, pretty low percentage ... yea lets build that way...

Before last year everyone said you need a strong mobile defence to win the cup. The Pens win without one, and now everyone thinks you can do it with a rag tag bunch.

You can't chase the flavour of the month. Build your team based on YOUR talent.

There have also been perennial contenders who failed to take the next step let alone win due to lack of adequate goaltending - STL & SJS come to mind. Unless a team is stacked which was the case for Niemi’s Hawks and Osgood’s Wings a team needs a very good goalie to win the Cup - TBay might be the only team in the NHL this season that qualifies as stacked and they have a good goalie albeit inexperienced.

The question though is whether a team can field a competitive contender with a goalie making more than 10% of the cap. Are the Habs that significantly better served with the extra $3M in cap hit to Price vs a $6M-$7M goalie and using the savings towards addressing other needs.

Unfortunately it become obvious the only way to address other needs is seemingly via drafting & development.
