And as far as the cap goes, why be worried about a contract you could trade without even trying. Its not like you are going to get stuck with Tavares' deal. If Gomez, Richards, Spezza etc. can be dumped surely Tavares can be if it comes to that. Its not like the market for first line centers will dry up.

People are on crack. you sign JT. Or would you rather wait another decade to get a star C for free?
Then trade Kadri or Nylander for a good, young top-pairing D.
JT's skating is a concern, but it's time to go for it.

I'm confused why we can "Go for it" with someone like Mcd at the deadline but not JT? Is it time or not to go for it ladies?

No, I'd rather sign someone as good or better, for less.
Such as .... ???

I'm all for signing McDavid for $9.5M per but that never happens.

I can either wait for the greatest and cheapest player to become UFA until I improve my team, or I can try my best to improve my team without losing any asset via UFA signing this summer.

Someone better for cheaper... jeez.

Forget that. Hopefully Tavares signs for 10ish and gives us legit center depth. Improves the team substantially over the likes of Bozak, JVR and Komarov clogging up over 11 million.

So why would the Leafs spend money on Tavares? Matthews/Kadri is a nice set of centers. Panarin I can understand but Tavares? It doesn't make sense to me even if they have the cap space right now.

first off, we don't actually know that Tavares is available.

so if we're talking about paying $12m for someone who might be available, i'd rather spend it on someone like Karlsson or Doughty - guys who are legitimately in the argument for best in the league at their position.

but for a Tavares level player, there's similar guys like panarin who will be available for significantly cheaper.

really, this all comes down to what you think Tavares is.

you guys think he's a slam dunk star, I think he's a clear cut below the elite in the league who has likely passed his peak already.

That has consistently been my entire point. You can only add a player that you actually have an opportunity to add. If its Tavares, great. If its Panarin, great. If its Karlsson or Doughty, great. But if one of those guys actually becomes an option it would be a mistake not to go for it. Those are the types of targets the Leafs have to look to spend their crazy cap space on.

And from all reports of them chasing Stamkos and now Tavares, it seems like they agree. If they miss on Tavares I'm sure they will chase the next one too.

Still has to fix that massive hole in net.

People pointing to Lou signing Grubauer but that's a major gamble itself.

Tavares resigning is probably more likely than leaving at this point, but no one knows anything. Especially coming out of Lou's cone of silence.

Yeah, if they were all FA the same year, it makes sense as an argument. But do you not sign Tavares this year because you *might* be able to sign Karlsson or Panarin or whoever next year? Do you give up legit assets for a rental player on the chance that he decides he likes it and wants to stay?

Good luck with that. I'd rather sign the best player that is actually available and actually make the team better and actually win.

The money is getting spent either way.

He keeps saying this like McDavid’s contract is getting terminated and we’re going to sign him for $5m.

Who are you waiting for, Zeke? Your entire position crumbles if you have no answer to that.

NHL players need Tavares to say no, I will talk with teams next week to have others to grow balls and not stay with their drafted teams all the time.

Tavares leaning towards staying; people putting it at 65/35 he staying put

Lou (and possibly Trotz) is a large upgrade. But really, if I'm Tavares, I'm not sure how internally I didn't have my mind made up on this already some time ago now. I doubt hiring a 76 year old who won't be around for the life of my new contract is going to alter my thinking.

@John Shannon
Peter Chiarelli says he is prepared to move the 10th pick for a quality defensman. Has has "some" discussions. Admits its not that easy.

Zaitsev...

He'll test the market. He may liely resign with the Isles but this close to UFA? Doesn't make sense not to at least hear what's out there. He can start talking to teams Monday no?

Zaitsev...

You really think Zaitsev is worth the #10? I'm betting he contacts Carolina, they have a slew of D down there.
