OT: The Toronto Blue Jays

Ownership wants to sell the team but keep the broadcast rights as part of the deal. Once this team is brought under MLSE they may finally start taking risks again and building a winning team.

yeah, shatkins started on this path long ago. not sure why people are still surprised. although their gutlessness does seem to keep reaching new levels.

literally every free agent this FO has signed since they got here has had a ~1war projection at the time of signing. it's pretty funny really. just millions and millions of dollars handed to marginally over replacement players. year after year. they can't help themselves.

Morales, Granderson and Pearce make nearly a combined $25 million and are projected to contribute about 3WAR for the #Bluejays. Cain was a 5WAR player last year and will cost about $19 million per season. @BlueJays

It's not a surprise, similar off-season as last year. They are just gathering up a lot of decent players; if you were filling a bench with Pearce, Granderson, Solarte, and Diaz that would be great! But that's IF we had a legit starter in LF and RF and didn't have a guy who can only DH.

C - Martin
1B - Smoak
2B - Travis
3B - Donaldson
SS - Tulo
LF - Martinez
CF - Pillar
RF - Cain
DH - Pearce/Granderson

UTIL - Solarte
IF - Diaz
OF - Pearce/Granderson

That's a team I can start to get on board with, but unless they get rid of Morales and are willing to spend some more, it's not gonna happen.

They still have 15 million to spend (if they are not planning to increase payroll for the first time in 8 years).

Just get Cain or make a trade for a real OFer. It's the only needle mover at this point.

Granderson/Pearce is a damn nice platoon for LF.

If they could land a Cain, or any reasonably good everyday RF that moves the needle a fair bit.

raising the floor, with guys like Solarte and Diaz to cover Travis/Tulo is unsexy, but important, also, Grandy/Solarte should also in theory steal DH PA's vs RHP from Morales, who was actually a beast vs LHP, but god **** stick awful vs RHP.

That said, i expect they sign someone cheap, another bit bat to force a platoon in LF and RF, someone like Rajai Davis...and have Davis/Pearce vs LHP and Granderson/Solarte/Zeke vs RHP.

Plus some form of a 8-10M SP. Assuming the RHOF is 5M

Shatkins is managing this team as if it's Cleveland, except he has 40 million or more to play with.

They're just buying more shitty players with the extra cash they have.

Well, we do have a lot of dead space on the roster right now. Morales/Pearce is their doing, but the large deals to Martin and Tulo do hamstring us quite a bit. The fact is, assuming we keep a 165M payroll which is around where it was last year (which was up from previous years), that only left us with ~25M in space to play with. So you're not bringing in Martinez and Cain plus depth pieces with that little to spend. Complain about Shatkins all we want, but it's Rogers who decides the payroll, so it's not like Shatkins can go to them and demand an extra 30M. There really is no reason why we shouldn't be up at the luxury tax mark, but that's on Rogers, not Shatkins.

So, with 25M or so to spend this year, getting Granderson and Solarte for less than 10M combined isn't that bad. We still have 15M or so to spend, but with holes at SP, in the bullpen, and in the OF, they're not going to be able to fill them all at FA prices. Of course, also the fact that the team doesn't appear to be making a serious push for a playoff spot (a la SFG/STL), or to make a serious push to rebuild (a la PIT), does leave us in a weird spot.

Projected WAR of 25 man roster:

Anthopolous' Guys: 24.6war (12 players, $86.5m)
Shapkins' Guys: 11.7war (13 players, $61.5m)

Just want to reiterate that according to the projections, as the team projected to be the best of the non playoff teams, there is no team in the AL for whom adding wins this offseason is more valuable to than the Blue Jays.

The teams best players are still AA's guys regardless of contracts.

Anyways, the payroll has gone up every year for about 10 years now. The fact that it's potentially not this year (after really good attendance) is maddening.

Morales is the real dead weight. Cutting him and adding a legit OFer would get me optimistic, won’t happen though

I agree there. But we're probably not dealing him unless if we're willing to take on dead weight from another team. Morales for Ellsbury or Choo are tempting options, as they would give us guys who probably fit better into our lineup, but they both have more dead weight on the end of their deals, so I'm not sure how much money you'd get the other teams to eat from them to make it worth it. But even there, we're basically just shifting from one dead weight to another, although presumably guys who have a little more upside to be useful.
