Leafs' Prospect/Marlies Discussion Thread!

Re: Leafs' Prospect Discussion Thread!

Poor McDavid...if he doesn't play like one of the ~10 best of all time, he'll be considered a bit of a bust.

Re: Leafs' Prospect Discussion Thread!

Would a market like this potentially ruin him?

The pressure from day 1 would break a lot of people

It would be harder here than anywhere else, yes. Would it potentially ruin him though? Depends. In a "coke and whores" kind of a way, yeah. But I think he's too good as a pure talent relative to the rest of the league for the pressure of playing in Toronto to ruin him as a player.

Re: Leafs' Prospect Discussion Thread!

McDavid grew up as a Leaf fan in the suburbs just outside of Toronto.

So, while the pressure may be greater here than anywhere else, it's not like he wouldn't have any idea what he'd be skating into.

Re: Leafs' Prospect Discussion Thread!

If a prospect were to get "ruined" by playing in this market it would be more on him than because of the "market" itself.

What i comes down to is insulating young hockey players with a good players around them. 1 guy won't make a team by himself, especially if he is still developing his craft.

An 18 year old Crosby wouldn't help this team in his first season. kind of the same thing that is happening in Colorado right now with MacKinnon. Their defense is awful, but they have a lot of talent up front. Sound familiar?

Who is a better prospect coming out(honest question)? McDavid or Mackinnon at draft time?

McDavid and it's not close.

Not really. Our defense has been pretty darn good lately, even with some pretty bad goaltending.

Mc david by a mile.

Mackinnon was good and a first overall but he was below guys like stamkos... tavares... pat kane.

Mcdavid is ahead of them

A 100 point Centre wouldn't help us?

05-06 is a weird season with nearly double the PPs as we have today. It also had the most 100 point scorers of any season in the last 15 and 2 guys over 120 points.

Im not sure 100 points at 18 is realistic for a rookie, even someone as good as mcdavid, cause that seems to have been a league wide anomaly.

Ya that's fair. My point really is that a player as good as a Crosby absolutely does impact your team immediately, even as a rookie.

True.

That said the Penguins still finished near the bottom of the league in 05-06 hence why they drafted 2nd overall. It took til crosbys second year (and adding jordan staal and malkin crossing the pond and some other moves) to be a playoff club

The leafs though are still ahead of the 05-06 penguins though with their roster.

Which is why I don't know how we have a shot at McDavid anyway other than a lottery win.

Can't see anyone trading that pick.

Yes the only option is a lottery win. The leafs werent as good as their 10-1-1 spurt earlier and arent as bad as their current 0-7-1 spurt either

Re: Leafs' Prospect Discussion Thread!

I do believe McDavid is in a very elite class even among 1st round picks.

Which is exactly why I don't think the Leafs will end up with him, no matter how low we drop ... it's the Ballard curse man.
