New York Yankees (2010-2013)

Re: New York Yankees

Sounds like there's a good chance Brendan Ryan will begin the season on the DL. He's had only eight at-bats because of two separate back injuries.

If he's unable to break camp, two of Dean Anna, Eduardo Nunez, Yangervis Solarte and Scott Sizemore are expected to make the team.

Anna and Nunez would have the advantage because they're already on the 40-man roster.

Re: New York Yankees

The battle for the fifth spot in the rotation:

Michael Pineda: 15.0 IP, 14 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 16 SO, 1.20 ERA, 1.000 WHIP, 9.1 OppQual.
David Phelps: 19.2 IP, 19 H, 6 ER, 4 BB, 14 SO, 2.75 ERA, 1.169 WHIP, 8.9 OppQual.

Girardi is expected to name the winner on Tuesday. My money is on Pineda.

Re: New York Yankees

Girardi indicated the order of the first four starters today but still hasn't announced the winner of the fifth spot in the rotation.

1. CC Sabathia
2. Hiroki Kuroda
3. Ivan Nova
4. Masahiro Tanaka

Re: New York Yankees

Girardi makes it official: Michael Pineda will be the team's number five starter.

He added that Pineda will not have any innings restrictions. He hasn't pitched since 2011 when he threw 171 innings with the Mariners.

Re: New York Yankees

John Ryan Murphy has been optioned to Triple-A.

This leaves Francisco Cervelli and Austin Romine in a battle for the backup catcher job. Cervelli has a huge advantage but there's still a chance he gets traded.

Re: New York Yankees

Austin Romine has officially been optioned to Triple-A this morning.

Francisco Cervelli will be the team's backup catcher.

Re: New York Yankees

Things are starting to get clearer three days before camp breaks as the team has announced 10 more cuts this morning.

Zoilo Almonte and Preston Claiborne have been optioned to Triple-A.

Danny Burawa, Russ Canzler, David Herndon, Chris Leroux, Fred Lewis, Jim Miller, Scott Sizemore and Yoshinori Tateyama have been assigned to minor-league camp.

_____

This leaves Dean Anna, Eduardo Nunez, Yangervis Solarte and Zelous Wheeler in a battle for the final two backup infield jobs. Brendan Ryan will begin the season on the DL.

In the bullpen, two of Dellin Betances, Cesar Cabral, Matt Daley, Shane Greene and Vidal Nuno will make the team.

Adonis Garcia and Antoan Richardson are still in camp, but barring a trade, Ichiro Suzuki is expected to be the team's fifth outfielder to begin the season.

Re: New York Yankees

It appears Cesar Cabral won't make the team.

I think Dellin Betances has won a spot, so the final battle will come down to Matt Daley and Vidal Nuno. Shane Greene is also still in camp.

Re: New York Yankees

And there it is — Girardi says Dellin Betances and Vidal Nuno have won the final two spots in the bullpen.

The infield decisions still haven't been made.

Re: New York Yankees

The Yankees have signed RHP Alfredo Aceves to a minor-league deal. He'll pitch in the Triple-A rotation.

The contract has an opt-out date of July 1st.

Re: New York Yankees

Getting a feeling the Yankees might be making a move to either add Yangervis Solarte or someone from outside the organization to the 40-man roster.

Could be wrong, but I think if their decision was Eduardo Nunez and Dean Anna, they would've announced it already.

Re: New York Yankees

So, looks like I'm probably wrong. Jedd Gyorko of the Padres just tweeted congrats to Dean Anna on making the Yankees' Opening Day roster.

Anna was in the Padres' organization from 2008-2013.

Re: New York Yankees

Girardi confirms after tonight's game that Dean Anna has made the Yankees' Opening Day roster.

The last infield decision is between Eduardo Nunez and Yangervis Solarte.

Re: New York Yankees

Hmm... Nunez & Solarte have been told not to bring bags to the park tomorrow and they won't travel to Houston with the team because the decision won't be made by then.

They were also told the Yankees are trying "to build the best team possible."

Still sounds like Cashman could be working on a trade.

Re: New York Yankees

Yangervis Solarte has made the team as the second backup infielder.

Eduardo Nunez has been optioned to Triple-A.

The Yankees still need to make a move to get Solarte on the 40-man roster.

Re: New York Yankees

Girardi confirmed his Opening Day lineup:

1. Jacoby Ellsbury - CF
2. Derek Jeter - SS
3. Carlos Beltran - RF
4. Brian McCann - C
5. Mark Teixeira - 1B
6. Alfonso Soriano - DH
7. Brett Gardner - LF
8. Brian Roberts - 2B
9. Kelly Johnson - 3B

CC Sabathia - LHP

Re: New York Yankees

Eduardo Nunez has been designated for assignment to make room on the roster for Yangervis Solarte.
