nator, I think you are right on.
For the past few years now we've been waiting for Stafford to assume the role of a legit top 6 forward on the Sabres and it hasn't happened. Inconsistency and injuries have labeled him one of Buffalo's weak forwards on the team putting himself in the doghouse.
This year Stafford has produced 22 points in 26 games played this season. 22 of those points are goals including two hat tricks. Yes he's been injured for awhile, but when playing Stafford has been a noticeable difference maker.
So the big question here is whether or not the Sabres decide to keep him? Will Buffalo trade him at the deadline or keep him and maybe sign him this summer?
He's making 2.3 million this year and is an RFA at the season's end. If traded, he can be a valuable offensive threat for any Stanley Cup contending team. As of now, it doesn't look like the Sabres will make the playoffs and will most likely make them sellers this trade deadline.
IMO, I think Buffalo should try to re-sign him near the deadline for a cheap 2 year deal. See what they can figure out for that time period. No more than a 2 year deal and anything over 3 million per. If that doesn't work out, trade him deadline day. Either for a pick or prospect to a contending team.
What would you guys/gals do with Stafford? Opinions and/or thoughts?
