The Nazi idea of racial superiority was inextricably linked to their expansionism and the US political class as well as a large chunk (but not a majority) wanted in the war immediately. They were concerned that a very large german-american population would be a huge political liability though. They got what they wanted when Japan took a pot shot at them.
