2013-14 Cherkers and Prospects Thread

Re: Cherkers Thread

I hope I'm proven wrong (as he was a classy guy and always represented the club well) but I think his time in the NHL is done.

OT - useless trivia....Maholtra is married to Steve Nash's sister.

Didn't read the article, but did it make reference to his eye injury? I believe he had one where he lost most of his vision in one of his eyes right?

Yeah that was the reason why the Canucks ultimately let him go (don't think they revealed too much about the eye injury itself out of privacy concerns for the player). Before the injury, he was a pretty solid defensive 3C (fantastic at faceoffs). Just don't expect any offense from him.

Again, a great person off the ice (did alot of community work around the city) so it was sad to see his career in Vancouver end this way.

Think he might have a future in coaching somebody.

Re: Cherkers Thread

One of the better defensive centers in the league in his prime. Useless offensively. If Malhotra has anything left in the tank and he can still play he would make a great 4th line center. I suspect JR is hedging his bets here on our 4th line center position. No risk here, worth giving him a chance to play som AHL games and see where he is.

Yup ... he actually played the whole 2011-12 season after the injury, but managed only 18 points as he fell to fourth line wing duty. THEN they put him on IR after 9 games last season ... "for the good of his long term health."

I hope he's gotten better, because Manny's a great leader and a hell of a checking center when he's healthy. Sounds like we're going to let him give it a try in Charlotte and see how it goes. He sure as heck could help the Canes on the fourth line if he proves to be up for it. If so, he certainly gives the Canes some cover should J Staal get injured. Right now your second best checking center is probably Dwyer ... and ugh. Let's hope it never comes to that.

Welcome to what passes for AHL scheduling over the last 5 years. These kinds of gaps are all too common in a league that tries to play 80% of their games between Thursday and Sunday. You get a weekend where a couple of arenas have other stuff scheduled, that this is what happens.

Re: 2013-14 Cherkers Thread

Heard on Hockey Night in Canada last night that Malhotra has dominated in the face off dot for the Checkers and there are other teams as well as the Canes who have interest in Manny...

Re: 2013-14 Cherkers Thread

The Canes need all the help they can get in the faceoff circle. They are pretty bad so far this season.

Re: 2013-14 Cherkers Thread

Those face off numbers against the LAK were abysmal. Any help would be valuable. The Hotstove segment on HNIC said Maholtras numbers were dominant from the left face off dot. I am sure the mention on that by the panel was referring to his eyesight.

Let's keep this in perspective. Yes, Manny has historically been great in the face-off circle, but his dominance thus far in the AHL is based on a sample of two games.

AND it's come against AHL opponents. I'm sure the Canes brass is watching him closely with an eye towards whether or not he can help the big club.

Re: 2013-14 Cherkers Thread

Even if Malhotra can still dominate on faceoffs, the problem is what happens immediately after he wins one. He's terrible offensively. So while their might be some value in having him win key defensive draws and he might be able to help kill penalties, our problems with faceoffs go beyond just losing defensive draws. He can't help us win key offensive zone faceoffs as then he would be on the ice (or have to immediately get off).

I can see Malhotra as a valuable 4th line PK defensive faceoff specialist but nothing more than that. This team is going to have to figure out how to win draws with the Staals and the other guys we have playing forward. Again we have 2 of the best faceoff guys in NHL history in this organization in Brindy and Francis...and Muller was no slouch either. They need to coach our current players up AND our players have to get tougher and bare down on faceoffs.

All that said, faceoffs have a way of balancing themselves out over the course of a season. We are at 44.1% now...it won't be that bad all year (at least it better not be).

Re: 2013-14 Cherkers Thread

The upside of Malhotra in addition to his faceoff ability is that he plays with some physical presence ... as opposed to most of what we've run out on the fourth line this season. Just sayin' ... we could BADLY use a guy who throws his body around a little bit.

Re: 2013-14 Cherkers Thread

Canada Juniors Prospect check....

Brock McGinn (OHL) 9 games 7 Goals 9 Assists (+9)
Sergey Tolchinsky (OHL) 8 games 7 goals 6 Assists (+3)

Trevor Carrick (OHL) 10 games 6 goals 4 Assists (even)

Daniel Altshuller (OHL) 7 Games 5-1-1 2.21 GAA .923 Sv%

Pretty good start for these guys.
