The ****ing Off Season thread

Kessel is a superstar. So is Bernier if he keeps playing like last year. Those guys almost took that shit team to the playoffs by themselves last year.

That alone should stop all Stamkos to Toronto rumours lol.

Stamkos won't 'come home' ... let's get that over with and focus on the players we can actually get.

So many superstars are rumoured to hit the UFA market, and so many of them re-sign with the original team in the end. All the talks about hitting the UFA market becomes just a bargaining chip.

The small % of stars that do hit the market, their teams may trade him before he walks away for nothing and he ends up signing with that team. Or, they hit the UFA market and go for the top $$, sign with the Rangers, the Penguins ...

I can't remember the last super-star who signed with Toronto in his prime .. Lindros was the only example I could think of who'd do anything to 'come home', but that was way over his prime. Nieuwendyk wanted to come home to a very good Maple Leafs team, but that was also when he's near the end of his career.

Let's just say I don't expect any superstar to sign with Toronto anytime soon.

Clarkson.

too soon?

Here's the real issue. These NHL players are offered massive deals before they hit UFA. That means if they turn it down they can get injured before they get a chance to sign with their chosen team and lose everything, That's why if you offer the 8 years and big money, chances are they will sign.

Looks like Booth's excited to be here.

whats he driving an intrepid???

anywho....on the Stamkos tip... he talks about how they have something there in Tampa.... really what they have is him. The second best player (st Louis ) just left and made it to the SCF. So really they have him Callahan?? and Hedman (who still hasn't lived up to his draft status) Gudas was exposed a bit during the playoffs, Malone is in need of rehab, Palat is interesting but a rookie

Soooo throw Stamkos on the Leafs and that line up looks way better than what they have in Tampa.

A Camaro.

They do have Drouin coming though too. But yeah, I think the Leafs would be better.

Tampa is a good team. Hedman was one of the best dmen in the league this year. With Stamkos they have the two most important building blocks for a championship team. They have solid depth behind those guys too. Drouin, Kucherov, Filpulla, Johnson, Palat, Callahan, Connolly. They can put together 3 solid lines. They also have a deep, vet defense. As long as they keep getting the goaltending they are contenders in the east. Its a pretty good situation.

But what he will be right off the bat is a champion of “different,” someone who can push the envelope and use the Leafs ridiculous resources to give the front office intel that other teams lack.

A $150,000 smart-camera system installed at the Air Canada Centre to provide exclusive, never-before available video and data on everything from pass completions to zone entries?

Not a problem.

An entire analytics department with people tracking new and compelling info, as other NHL teams are currently doing and as Dubas had created on a shoestring budget – with a ticket sales rep, an intern and a business manager doing the tracking – in the Soo?

Easily doable here, on a whole different level.

The possibilities are really endless, and that’s part of what drew Dubas to the opportunity and the Leafs to him.

That is music to my ****ing ears.

We've kind of mused around here for years about the types of interactions they should be tracking. There's no reason why we shouldn't be able to track everything that player's are doing out there. Passes completed in total%, categorized by distance, from zone to zone, direction. Board battles won, broken down into all sorts of cats.

With a game as dynamic as hockey, there's all sorts of room to grow and develop your analytics department around differing philosophies on how the game should be played...

awesome.

Hockey isn't baseball or football. It's a seamless transition back and forth between offense and defense.

Having some stat geek come in won't do much.
