Gale Force ... You're On the Clock ... Post Season Changes Thread

Sounds like this guy worked with Cam Ward a very long time ago, so at least I see some sort of thought was put into this hire.

read the article dwind posted, regarding the Preds acquisition of Roy and Ribeiro. Holy center depth batman.

Having a lot of players at one position doesn't translate to depth. More like they signed these guys in hopes that somebody will jump out of the pack. Much like the Canes' approach to defense.

Not positional maybe, but if your scenario plays out, they may have then some tradable assets for other holes. Do we have that depth?

Moving a center to wing is fairly easy. Wing to center is difficult.
Of the 18 centers listed, 14 could be moved to the wing and if that fills up, move the rest to D and if that fills, maybe one can be a goalie.

Speaking of depth, here's a preliminary depth chart for the Checkers.

Boychuk is already pencilled in for the Canes, so that would presumably elevate the recently signed Justin Shuggs up to the top line.

We might be okay pulling injury-relief from that top row of talent. But wouldn't want to dip any deeper...and if we are...well, get busy Deadline Ron.

Late lunch and I'm winding down the work week anyway...so let's talk some hockey.

I'm very curious to see how Peters will organize the top-9 forwards for training camp and beyond. Beyond the fourth line, we have essentially the same personnel and have seen several permutations as to how to arrange them in the past.

Ron mentioned focusing on pairs and deploying them with a complementary third forward before he started the coaching interviews, so presumably we're still approaching the lines with that thought in mind. However, there doesn't seem to be any natural pairs other than the rather obvious on-ice (and off-ice) chemistry we saw between Skinner and Lindholm toward the end of last season.

Presumably the team is still going to run its primary checking function from a two-way second line, centered by Jordan Staal, meaning his wingers have to be two-way players, as well. More defensive zone starts and PK'ers found on the fourth line, as well.

So, primary offense comes from the first and third lines in our system. And, in the past, due to defensive play lapses in Skinners game, along with perceived incompatibility with either of the Staals, plus experience/size issues with Lindholm's game, those two have been largely confined to our third line.

Therefore, we've had the likes of Gerbe and Dwyer in the top-six so that Skinner and Lindholm could have their own line, perhaps limiting Jordan's offensive production in the process. Or, we've shifted Tlusty and/or Semin down to the two-way role line and promoted Gerbe (who is the new LaRose) to Eric's line.

So is it this (all forward talent to the top-six, w/two-way skills considered):

Skinner / E.Staal / Lindholm
Tlusty / J.Staal / Semin
Gerbe / Nash / Boychuk
Malone / McClement / Dwyer

or this (Skinner/Lindholm on their own line w/emphasis on the two-way line and E.Staal on his own...again):

Gerbe / E.Staal / Boychuk
Tlusty / J.Staal / Semin
Skinner / Nash / Lindholm
Malone / McClement / Dwyer

or this (Skinner/Lindholm on their own line with an emphasis on the top line and lesser offensive talent given to Jordan):

Tlusty / E.Staal / Semin
Gerbe / J.Staal / Dwyer
Skinner / Lindholm / Boychuk
Malone / McClement / Dwyer

Going to be interesting to see the approaches taken, both initially and eventually.

looks familiar so I hope not.

The only thing really new is the coach and our fourth line, with its limited ice time and impact.

Same as it ever was.

EDIT: The aspect allegedly separating this from insanity being the "betterness" factor. That most, if not all, of our players will be better this season. And that the coaches will coach them better, too. Hey, it might work.

Yeah, it sure might! The canes will improve, but so will all the other teams.
