2014-15 Premier League Thread

The Football league would, its probably their biggest money maker.

If you scrap the League Cup then some of the money from the FA Cup and/or Premier League TV rights would need to be diverted to the Football League.

League One and League Two already contest a tournament. Add the Championship sides to the Football League Trophy and be done with the League Cup.

Fine......... but somebody is going to have to make up the money the Football league will lose (TV rights for that cup are going to be worse a lot less than one that involves the Premier League teams)

First win in the last 16 matches for Arsenal against any of Man City, Man U or Chelsea.

First time in 16 matches they have actually played the occasion.

They sat in, closed of the spaces for David Villa and played counter attacking football.......... rather than the normal approach which is lets pretend we are Barcelona playing away to a nobody we can out skill.

Everton 0-0 West Brom

Ugly match. Tony Pulis soccer has already taken hold at West Brom. Some controversy at Goodison too...Mirallas took a penalty in the 44th minute instead of Baines. He missed badly and didn't come out for the 2nd half. NBC just showed a wide angle of what happened leading up to it. Mirallas grabbed the ball, ran by Lukaku who had a word, ran by Naismith who pointed at Baines and put the ball down on the spot. Baines had a word, gave him a pat on the head and withdrew.

In post match comments both Naismith and Martinez took the high road and didn't throw Mirallas under the bus. But Martinez was clear, that Baines takes penalties for Everton. But he said that both were confident after the shootout loss to West Ham in the FA Cup. There may be a locker room problem...

Martinez said later that Mirallas had a hamstring problem and that's why he came out. Not buying it.

It's an honest mistake. Mirallas couldn't see Naismith. Unfortunately, the same quality that makes him impossible to defend prevented his own teammate from noticing him as well.

Matchweek 23. A battle of the titans on Saturday with the top 2 teams facing off at Stamford Bridge. Both teams coming off awful FA Cup performances at home last weekend. Chelsea beat Liverpool on Thursday in the League Cup, fielding a mostly first choice lineup. Man City can't catch Chelsea with a win but they can put some more doubt in them. Sunderland, Man U and Liverpool have midweek FA Cup matches so we'll see what kind of lineup they field.

Saturday:
Hull v. Newcastle 7:30/12:30 NBCSN
Man U v. Leicester 10:00/15:00 NBCSN
Crystal Palace v. Everton
Liverpool v. West Ham
Stoke v. QPR
Sunderland v. Burnley
West Brom v. Spurs
Chelsea v. Man City 12:30/17:30 NBC

Sunday:
Arsenal v. Aston Villa 8:30/13:30 NBCSN
Southampton v. Swansea 11:00/16:00 NBCSN

Edit to add: Chelsea won't have Diego Costa. The FA suspended him for 3 games for stomping Emre Can in the League Cup match on Thursday.

The late game on Saturday:

Chelsea 1-1 Man City

Today:
Arsenal 5-0 Aston Villa
Southampton 0-1 Swansea

Villa have now gone more than 10 hours of league play without scoring a goal. Benteke scored in the 18th minute against Man U on December 20.

We are utter utter crap. Benteke can't be bothered for anything. He can complain about lack of service, but he loses every aerial challenge that's played to him. He is crap. Any time Sanchez thinks he should do something attacking I just role my eyes and wait two seconds for him to be quickly dispossessed or the long range shot that goes harmlessly 30 feet wide of the net. We have zero protection in front of the back four and our back four is crap anyway. Weimann at least looks like he cares, which is possibly the only positive statement I can make.

I thought Carles Gil was pretty good in his debut. But you're right, Benteke just drifted around the pitch today and the back four was bad.

VDC nails it ... Villa are adrift under Lambert and I honestly don't see him getting them back. We're not that good, but even the good parts are increasingly lost at sea.
