Habs acquire Sergei Gonchar for Travis Moen

The "funniest" thing is seeing Ray Lewis on ESPN as a "respected" member of the media.

Why wouldn't he be? He was acquitted... do you think a black man is guilty even though he was found not guilty by the legal system you have sworn to uphold?????

I have mixed feelings about this.

Pros
------
Clears up cap space for next year and we will need every little bit we can get
Opens up a spot for our young forwards
Should help the PP a little bit
Opens up a trade possibility using Beaulieu or Tinordi

Cons
-------
Uses a lot of cap space this year that could have been spent somewhere else
Takes ice time away from Beaulieu and Tinordi
Makes us slower, softer and more defensively vulnerable.

Where does it use space that we could have used elsewhere? Any team selling at the deadline would surely take Gonchar's contract back for the final 15-20 games of the year.

Huh. If you're selling, you're not in the mood to waste a $500K to $1M in real dollars on something that will never help you.

Huh. If you're selling for future assets like prospects or picks and you're likely giving up a bunch of salary in the deal, you're fine with taking on the final few weeks of an expiring contract.

don't recall that happening much. not ideal for the seller.

people do not understand prorating

You only talk about prorating if you talk about deadline capspace, which I did not. I mentioned cap space RIGHT NOW, which is already prorated to 40 or whatever days since the start of the season.

The point is: we lost a little cap space but it's not like it wasn't going to be spent anywhere else. The idea that you need to save that space in case Carolina calls to trade Eric Staal for Brendan Gallagher is absurd. Doesn't work like that, unfortunately. We are still left with enough cap space to make a hockey move, or a deadline pick up.

Well we used to be able to take on about $4.2M in salary and now we can only take about $1.8M. That number will go up over the course of the season but if we were to make a significant acquisition, we would be forced to send some salary the other way.

It's not a huge deal, especially if no trades are made but it's definitely a con.

Yes, that's exactly what I think. BTW, he was never acquitted of murder - he couldn't have been, the murder charges were dismissed in exchange for a guilty plea on other charges - but I can have an opinion as to his guilt regardless of what transpired in the judicial system. BTW, you should know that the legal system is not really based on the search for truth.

Gonchar's cap hit is 4.6m, Moens is 1.85m. The Habs Currently have $1,973,543 in cap space which equates to $7,450,125 at the deadline. Still significant.

The deal boils down to taking an additional 2.75m this year to get rid of Moen's contract next year. PP should be better and Moen brought nothing that Bournival/Bowman could not.

I was thinking that Sergei would share a laugh with his new teammates over his Ole type effort on that 2010 game 7 playoffs goal the Habs scored by skating easily around him but it is a little ironic that the guy that did that fly-by was the guy that Sergei got traded for today.

I asked this question the other day... how do our defenseman rank defensively as a group in the NHL? I dare ask that now.

Yeah... I was just joking, just saying.

BTW he was never even accused of murder was he? Wasn't it obstruction of justice or something like that?

The black athlete is naturally superior to his caucasian counterpart 9 times out of 10 - unless they're Carleton from the Fresh Price, which Kane is definitely not....

Subban, Simmonds, Kane makeup the elite crop of young NHL players in terms of pure athletic talent - Byfuglien is the exception to the rule, and he's still quite dominant despite not being a poster child for athletic body.[

He's the poster boy for the typical NFL body.... Man I wonder how long he can last in the quicker NHL, he will have to keep losing more and more weight as he gets older.

That Moen goal came when Gonchar was on the powerplay, no less.

I'm not sure how much Gonchar has in the tank -- 23 points in his last 79 games.

I don't think this portends a bigger trade. They get rid a 4th line albatross who can easily be replaced by a bunch of kids on the taxi squad or the farm and, (big) maybe, a little help on the PP. The cost is an ugly contract that expires at year end.

Managing on the margins; Bergevin saw and opportunity and took it.

I guess thats the main point, PP specialists do not grow on trees, 4th line plugs do.

I am sure we can dump Gonchar at the trade deadline if we do not seem to be going anywhere, but that depends on how he plays the rest of the year. If he stinks nobody will want him.
