Wonder what will become of the abandoned Russia match? I think they should win by forfeit, but with UEFA, who knows?

So it's possible that England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland AND Ireland will qualify. Long way to go, but ... has that ever happened before?

First half, all Belgium, and a fortunate goal by Maroune Fellani.

Second half, I doze off after halftime lunch, awaken in the 72nd minute to see Vincent Kompany has been sent off, and Israel is controlling the game. Unfortunately for them, unable to find the finishing touch just yet (85th minute).

EDIT - a couple more chances for Israel went begging. Final from Jerusalem: Belgium 1-0 Israel

Second edit - the win puts Belgium top of group B, ahead of Wales on goal difference. Israel drops to third.

Bale and Ibrahimovich should both get face time in a major international competition after missing the last one.

Boy, have we been slack in keeping this updated...

After today's matches, there will be 2 left to be played between October 8-13. Iceland, Czech Republic and England have qualified with 2 matches to go. Spain, Slovakia, and Austria qualify with wins today (Austria also qualifies with a draw). Switzerland qualify with a win and help. The group winners, runners up and top 3rd place team qualify automatically. The remaining 8 3rd place teams have a 2 leg playoff in November for the last 4 spots.

Group A - Iceland and Czech Republic qualified. Turkey is 3rd, Netherlands is 4th and in a world of trouble after losing 3-0 to Turkey on Sunday. If the Oranje lose at Kazakhstan on 10/10, Turkey can knock them out with a point against the Czech Republic
Group B - Wales and Belgium are assured of making the playoffs. Wales missed their chance to qualify by being held to a draw against 3rd place Israel on Sunday. Wales need 1 point from their last 2 matches. Belgium qualify with a win against Andorra. Bosnia can still catch Israel for 3rd.
Group C - Spain and Slovakia can clinch today. Ukraine are guaranteed at least a playoff spot.
Group D - German need a point to clinch. Poland can clinch with a win combined with an Ireland loss to Germany. Scotland can catch Ireland for 3rd with 2 wins combined with 2 Ireland losses.
Group E - England have qualified, a Swiss win over England today combined with a loss or draw by Slovenia. Estonia are 3rd but can be caught by Slovenia and Lithuania.
Group F - Northern Ireland qualify with a win in either of their last 2 matches. Romania, Hungary and Finland are battling for 2nd and 3rd.
Group G - Austria qualify with a win or draw against 2nd place Sweden. They can also qualify with a loss combined with a Russia loss or draw to Liechtenstein. Sweden, Russia and Montengro are battling for 2nd and 3rd, but Montenegro need help. Liechtenstein need 2 wins combined with 2 losses by both Russia and Montenegro for 3rd.
Group H - Italy and Norway are assured of at least making the playoffs. Pending the results of a disciplinary hearing on 9/17, Croatia could be too. They are appealing a UEFA decision to deduct 1 point for racist behavior in an early match against Italy. If the deduction is upheld, they could be caught by Bulgaria.
Group I - Portugal qualify with a win over Denmark on 10/8. Albania qualify with a win combined with a Denmark loss. Those 3 teams are guaranteed of at least making the playoffs.

Thursday's results

Group D:
Georgia 4-0 Gibralter
Ireland 1-0 Germany
Scotland 2-2 Poland

Group F:
Hungary 2-1 Faroe Islands
Northern Ireland 3-1 Greece - Northern Ireland qualify
Romania 1-1 Finland

Group I:
Albania 0-2 Serbia
Portugal 1-0 Denmark - Portugal qualify

That Scotland draw was heartbreaking to see, even if it was just the highlights.

And Ireland deserved that win. They were resolute in the back (even after Given went down with a knock) and clinical when they needed to be. Unlike Germany.

Friday's results:

Group C:
Macedonia 0-2 Ukraine
Slovakia 0-1 Belarus
Spain 4-0 Luxembourg - Spain qualify

Group E:
England 2-0 Estonia
Slovenia 1-1 Lithuania
Switzerland 7-0 San Marino - Switzerland qualify

Group G:
Liechtenstein 0-2 Sweden
Moldova 1-2 Russia
Montenegro 2-3 Austria

So here is how the groups finished:

Group A - Iceland, Czech Republic, Turkey (best 3rd place ranking)
Group B - Belgium, Wales
Group C - Spain, Slovakia
Group D - Germany, Poland
Group E - England, Switzerland
Group F - Northern Ireland, Romania
Group G - Austria, Russia
Group H - Italy, Croatia
Group I - Portugal, Albania

England became the 6th team to win all their qualifiers.

Qualifiers for playoffs - Hungary, Ukraine, Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Ireland, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Slovenia. Netherlands missed the playoffs by a bunch, 5 points behind Turkey, 7 behind the Czech Republic, finishing 4th in the group on 13 points with a 4-1-5 record.

The playoffs will be 2 legs, November 11-14 and November 15-17. Seeded teams in the playoffs are Bosnia, Ukraine, Sweden and Hungary.

Some small countries flexing up for this round of the Euros ... Northern Ireland, Albania, Iceland, Wales, Croatia and Slovakia are all postage stamps compared to the big fellas. And you could add even more with the playoffs. Could it be the year of the little guy or will all those underdogs fade out in Groups? Should be fun to watch.

Iceland came within a whisker of qualifying for the WC last year, losing to Croatia in a 2 leg playoff. Albania finished 5th in the group that Iceland was in, Northern Ireland and Wales finished 5th in their groups. Slovakia finished a distant 3rd in their group. Change can come quickly.

Yeah, and it was inevitable that some smaller countries would be represented in Euros since they increased the size of the field for this one. But when you consider the sheer size of Wales, N. Ireland and Iceland (and Slovenia for that matter, who still have a shot) and the utter lack of history of success in Albania this field is shaping up to be fairly historic.
