2015 UFA/RFA Talk

That was the "sure" part.

I know you get it but quite a few people do not seem to understand that the owners pay 50% of HRR no matter if Subban makes 15m or 1m.

yep..the whole point of the lockout was cost certainty. If salaries escalate, that means more dough for the owners, raised values for franchises, etc

some people are so bad at math...

And the owners count on that, because they will still use contracts like Stepans as justification for the next lockout, when the real reason for the next lockout will be them wanting to reduce 50% of HRR to 45% or some other lower number.

that was the basis of the first lockout too was it not, and then only seven years later, the owners still whined about growing salaries and wanting more of the pie

too bad some of you are naïve enough to think the owners won't whine about the salaries and costs next time around

at least you get it

Owners will whine but they'll have a harder time winning the public opinion battle this time if they argue for more than 50% of the share.

Seriously, this league is sick. 6.5 million for a guy that doesn't score 20 goals. and barely has 50 points a season.

This league is sick when Jake Gardiner , Emelin and David Clarkson make what they make , not Stepan .

When clowns make 4-5 mil paying 6.5 to a legit #2C who is only 25 and part of your future and a good playoff performer isnt outrageous.

He would of easily topped 60 points with a full season , and is a 2C on every team in this league .

Spezza in decline is making 7.5 for what he used to be , Koivu is making 7 , ROR at 7.5 , Step is is a solid player no issue with this signing .

one would hope but you know the general public will say, they should be happy they are paid anything to play a game, Drs don't make that much etc Joe Public and Joe 6Pack think the players make too much

People tend to argue about the share of the pie they are entitled to...but what so and so is making is irrelevant.

Perception is reality.

Owners focus on high salaries, they won't mention Stepan by name but they will say, players are taking too much of the total, we are all losing money (and with a 76 cent dollar they won't be making as much as there will be less welfare from the Canadiens and Leafs). The system isn't working etc

The next phase of the CBA will give the owners some gains in player salaries or term control . You may see some criteria included such as much shorter term , the ability to walk away from 1 contract lets says every 2 years , team options , or much lower buyouts.

This current CBA structure IMO will be revamped to give the owner more control over team.

True but no one likes a bully either.

Anyway, there is plenty of time until the next lockout.

One would hope that both sides would just walk into a room at noon and sign off by 12:05 given there should not be any changes. Alas, I stopped believing in fairy tales a while back.

Thats completely true in the reality of the negotiation between the NHL and NHLPA

However the owners say look at this guy, and look at that guy, and look at all these overpaid players, as there way of justifying the lockout to the fans so that they can sell tickets after the lockout is over.

The NBA owners are already claiming that 10 or more teams are losing money and the NBA Players Association are saying that is Bullshit.

Of course it's bullshit. The NBA makes money by the boatload, especially with that new TV deal kicking it that makes the NHL's TV deal look like chump change. I'd be surprised if there was more than one or two teams bleeding money, excluding the teams that go through the luxury tax.

Until the sports teams are force to open their books with real numbers, they will unfortunately always have the players by the balls because they will always use fictional numbers and hide a lot of their income related to the sports team. The owners all have other companies with sources of revenue coming and while not getting revenue from their sports team might not be fun, they can do just fine. The majority of the players don't have an alternative.

They will always, always try to squeeze more money out of the players. The next lockout will be to get a higher % of HRR to the owners and to get the max term of deals shortened.

I'd like to see a law preventing public institutions (government, cities, etc) to give money or benefits to a private company without the company opening its book.
