Kessel to Pens

From ISS:

13. KASPERI KAPANEN
KalPa – SM-Liiga
Position: RW
Born: Jul 23/96
Height: 6.00
Weight: 181

Strengths
1. Explosive skater end-to-end ability
2. Dynamic creativity at top speeds
3. Arsenal of offensive weapons

Weaknesses:
1. Defensive zone reliability/patience
2. Consistent passion & drive

Skill: Dynamic offensive threat with explosive speed and highlight reel end-to- end ability

Scouting Report:

Battled through adversity this year whether it was injuries, a disappointing U18 team performance or being forced to lead the last place KalPa team in the SM-Liiga. His statistics with KalPa don’t give a true representation of what he is able to produce as he had a limited supporting cast and was looked at to lead the offense as a 17 year old. He grabs your attention everytime he has the puck as his explosive speed, creativity and lethal offensive weapons show gamebreaker potential. His lower body strength and ability to maintain possession while being harassed by opposition checkers is excellent. Kasperi takes charge on the puck and displays the potential to be that go-to forward who can get the job done on the puck and puts a lot of pressure on himself to step into that role regardless of what team he’s playing for.

ISS Scout S.Cocker: “Combination of puck possession, explosive skating gears and slick hands makes him a threat everytime he steps on the ice”.
D. Mac’s Quote: “Needs to improve consistency & doesn’t use his excellent shot often enough”.

NHL Potential: Top 6 offensive threat can be used both pp/pk units.
Style compares to: Tomas Plekanec

More high level skating and IQ.

Wow. What a horrific deal.

Horse shit move , even if you wanted Phil out of town , cmon guys skill sets like Phil are very rare regardless if you dont like him.

FFS get at least someone for your top 6 even Perron. Kaspanen is ok but Marner , Brown, Bracco, Nylander , etc.....your not building your team around a half dozen skilled small guys .

Phil was worth a hell of a lot more , should of waited a year , no rush to pull this off.

Kessel had to go. Not a great trade, but if thats the best you can do thats the best you can do. He couldn't come back here for more of what happened last year.

Because there is no point. He is 28 and the leafs aren't competing in the next few years while he is still in his prime. Combine that with the fact that he isn't built to be the best player on a team in a market like Toronto, and its more distructive than its worth. With a young team you need him to be a leader, and he's just not. Its just not a good fit here anymore.

Garbage. This is exactly the reason why i didn't want him moved.

Sucks being a Leaf fan sometimes.

That doesn't change the fact that we got a pile of garbage for him.

Totally disagree , your team is not capped out or have any issues to move anyone right now . Pitt is desperate not you guys . You can sit back and wait for a team looking for offence to give you more .

You should of retained more salary and told shit for brains Rutherford Pouliot must be part of the deal or get another #1 pick .

My habs would of been crucified if all I got was this for PK even if we wanted him out town , sorry folks not enough value here in this trade . You needed to get at least 1 legit building block that you can say no doubt is with me 5 years from now.

None of that says you have to de-value your asset though. We just paid a coach some outrageous sum of money to control the situation you're worried about. If you're not getting a suitable return (we didn't) you keep that asset until a suitable return emerges.

THIS. F*CKING THIS.

Yes Kessel can score a **** load, but he doesn't play defense, he avoids any sort of puck battles, he avoids all contact, he's one of the first guys off the ice after practices, he is not steady and calm.

Great player, but he has serious flaws that prevent him from being a good best player on a young rebuilding team. Much better fit running shotgun to Sid. He can just do his thing.

Well clearly it does devalue the asset though. This is the best other teams were willing to pay.

There is a reason teams weren't lining up for the guy, and its not because he isn't an elite scorer.

Again, yes. But why sell at below value. What's our rush, we're gonna be bad no matter what.

That's the point. You allow your extremely high paid coach to make that asset more valuable. The fact teams we're willing to underpay isn't a surprise is it.
