OT: Soccer Thread

We are in group of death with Morocco, Portugal and Spain. The only good side of it is Portugal which is so unpredictable and kind of ordinary team without CR7.
If we manage to beat Morocco then there will be some hope.

Lets go Team-Melli.

Not really!

Smart guy, he knows he can't achieve anything more with this Real team and some aging stars.

-Won WC as player.
-Won CL as player.
-Won CL as coach.

Next step will be winning WC as coach, he will eventually take over of France. A team which lots of talent which mainly lacked a great coach and leadership.

Well Florentino Pérez was in shock! lol

Looks like RM is gonna try to poach Pochettino.

France issue was never lack of talent(at least not in last 7-8 years). They lack the leadership and great coaching.

One of the top outfield players need to seize the mantle as the boss, not Lloris. Greizmann, maybe Pogba. Someone like that. They’ve always been a tetchy diaspora team, but if this version can rally around someone and become coherent group then watch out. On paper, this is possibly the deepest and most talented team at the WC.

Yeah, that’s a tough gig. I agree your path forward is through Portugal, which is not easy.

Spain, well, your guys will just need to be super-disciplined and focus on removing/shrinking passing lanes/space/triangles in the final third of the field. Opponents need to accept Spain will have 60% ball possssion (at a minimum), it just depends where and how. Don’t get caught in no man’s land or they will tear you apart. Young coaches and enthusiasts should study the tactics Germany used to cancel out Messi and the Argies at WC 14. That’s how it’s done, if you have Toni Kroos and Schweinsteiger... :pepper

I mean ... that's a tough out for anybody in that group not named Portugal or Spain, but it's hardly a group of death. In fact, there are no groups of death in this WC. The groups are exceptionally balanced.

We almost neutralized Messi in 2014. So he had to take long rang shot outside the box to score the winner for Argentina at 93 minute. Without saying a %100 penalty was denied for us in that match. But this Iran team is not as good as 4 years a go in defense. We are much stronger in offensive midfielder, wingers and specially forward though compare to 2014. Another issue for Iran is our main DM guy missing the first match against Morocco due to red card in Q round which was carried over.

Our coach Quireoz strongly beleive on bulding attack from CD. So he refused to include the 36 years old Hosseini with over 100 caps in final squad(he is in stand by list). Instead he is playing a DM as CD which is a bit odd if you ask me. Bulding attack from behind and having CD with great vision is one thing but you have to be a defender to play as defenseman. Anyway we will see
.. he was already heavily bashed by local media.

# 20 looks like a pizza delivery boy
# 4 looks like an executioner
# 7 looks like a playboy
# 8 looks like a music star

LOL!! 20 and 18 are our stars.
#4 indeed look scary on and off the field. He is the biggest question mark in coach selection and our weakest link in defense. may not start in WC though.

He has quite the throwing arm. He is like Markov, the king of stretch passes.

You are right. He has probably one of the longest goalkeeper throw in the world.

It’s very taxing on the CD, for sure. But it’s lethal of you have guys who carry the load, like Hummels or Piqué. It really depends on what role you give the CMs, how high up the pitch to engage them? How strong are the left/right channels - do the FBs pinch up, or are they conservative? What the usual formation? 3-4-3 is typically used if CD runs the show, lots of options. But that CD has to be really phoquin’ sound in his ball distribution.

Our left-back is strong, the kid is pretty good in attack and defense, one of our CD is quite sharp also, 3 big question marks are RB, another CD and DM in the first game because the key guy as i said is suspended vs Morocco.

Carlos Queiroz usually use 4-2-3-1 or 4-1-4-1, depending to opponents. He is kind of manager who beleive each player should be able to play in multiple positions, he is playing few of target forward as wingers.
Anyway, Iran will be a counter-attack team again, i guess in today football you need to defend in unite of 10, is not only one or two players, pressing start from forwards even.
For us the first match against Morocco is key, if we lose this one then it is pretty much over. On paper we have the weakest squad compare to three other teams, even almost the whole Morocco squad play in top 4-5 leagues in the world.

As we talk Jahanbakhsh is our best player, he is the winger but finished the season with AZ in Dutch league as the top league scorer, and second best player in the league, great passer and scorer.

Very professional kid with the right attitude.

I’ll go out on a limb here and say Argentina will struggle to get out of their group. Terrible preparation, injuries and a tough group... Croatia, Nigeria and Iceland. Obviously they have #10, but this could go sideways.
