The Habs entered the season with nearly 10 million in cap space. With that type of money available it doesn't even really matter what Markov was asking for (cause it sure as hell wasnt 10 million). The off season was an utter failure by MB. It left this team with no chance in hell to compete.

And of course there is a limit to how much you are going to pay a 39 year old player even if its just one year, no matter how much cap space you have. Note Russia didnt even take Markov to the Olympic games, he has really slowed down a lot.

Now its up to MB to deliver next year with the large cap space. Dreger was saying that its possible that MB will be judged on his ability to get Tavares or not. It's his last chance to keep his job.

On a one year deal Markov was a no brainer. MB didn't have a good offseason. Let's not pretend that he did.

He signed in the KHL in July. There was time to get a deal elsewhere if he wanted to. You are kidding yourself if you think the Habs are the only team that wanted him. I think internally his options were Habs or KHL. His ex-wife died, he took on the kids and he wanted a stable option.

If he really wanted to stay in the league take a 1 year deal with anyone and move .

He is getting good money in Russia probably tax free , an AHL caliber league with less stress on the body .

No point staying in the NHL at near 40 if he wasn't getting overpaid for 2 years .
