Habs News & Notes: 2019 Offseason

Habs News & Notes: 2017-18 Regular Season

Let me start by saying I’m not this Journey to Lourdes follower of Shanny-Plan - it seems to me to be all contingent on the drafting of Mathews.

Having said that, what I do like about Shanahan’s revamping of the Leafs management is having differing hockey philosophies all working towards a common goal - at least that how I see it from a layman’s perspective.

There’s old school: Lou & Babcock

There’s modern train of thought: Dubas

And the combination of the two: Mark Hunter (grew up & played old school hockey, but was integral in building possibly the most avant-garde & successful junior program in the world over the past dozen years)

Compare that to: Bergeron, Dudley, Mellanby, Lapointe, Churla, Julien, Lefebvre, Dufresne....all of the similar philosophy & ilk.

Successful businesses are driven by differing talents & philosophy who hold a common goal of getting to the finish line.

It is frustrating that the habs (and largely the NHL) focus sooo much on defense.

Chuck is not great at D. But...

a) put players in a position to succeed
b) the habs have Price to make up for chuck sucking defensively
c) the habs have Weber to make up for chuck sucking defensively
d) put a more defensively strong winger on the line
e) the habs cant score so the focus should be on developing offense
f) we have nothing else even close to a first line centre so deal with it

Yep... let AG worry about putting the puck in the other net. Price and our "defensive" dmen can keep the puck out of ours.

Re: Habs News & Notes: 2017-18 Regular Season

Yeah . . . no. Not how hockey is played.

So all cantermen are good defensively?

The Sabres are doing it with Eichel. He's worse defensively than AG... but they let him go out there are play offense.

Re: Habs News & Notes: 2017-18 Regular Season

Seguin is probably learning the defensive side now, but he was a dumpster fire for a few years.

"not how hockey is played.... in Montreal."

A center should be responsible defensively. Crosby is. Eichel is no Crosby. And Buffalo sucks.

Spezza was brutal defensively for years... like hung out at the red line. Put up points though.

Yeah, Crosby is the best player in the world. Nobody is Crosby.

Eichel is no Crosby... but Eichel is NOT the reason Buffalo sucks.

Yet the Sabres suck every year..

Just need to look at what Babcock’s done with Kadri who was porous defensively - gave him the Scotty to Stevie Y treatment, and Kadri decided to take on the challenge, Mathews was solid from the get go, yet he committed to taking on the challenge.

If Galchenyuk’s commitment doesn’t improve drastically he’ll be KHL bound within 3-4 years IMO.

yet the Penguins didn't move him to wing...
He played wing more than half of his rookie year - then spent his entire summer working on face offs & defensive awareness/coverage.

Came back sophomore season and dominated. Work ethic & commitment can make things happen.

Gord Miller has the best line: “all players want to be good & stars, but star players want to be stars at everything they do, at
practice, at the gym, at the video room, on the ice for the game”

Simple math: if you’re on the ice for one goal for but two against, your team is not benefiting.

is that worse than not being on for a goal for and two against like we are now?

We have ruined Galchenyuk and are in the process of ruining Drouin too.

Re: Habs News & Notes: 2017-18 Regular Season

He played wing majority of his rookie year.

He played part of his rookie year on Mario's wing. When Mario retired 26 games into the season, Crosby moved to centre and has been there ever since. It wasn't that he had learned the defensive game, and graduated to centre.

We know that's not the case with Galchenyuk though. When he's played centre the team scores more with him on the ice than they allow.

and we also know that putting a guy with one goal in basically a year between 27 and 92 is not going to help yet our management/coaches thought that was a good decision :facepalm
