The league pays lip service to player safety.
It's not just the slashes. It's also cross checking, which players seem to be able to do with impunity these days. I'm pretty sure Roberts nearly had his career end early over repeated cross checks to his neck area. In the LA game, Doughty was allowed to repeatedly (like, 8 times) hammer the back of JVR's (might have been someone else) neck/shoulders rather viciously while he was down on the ice. The ref was looking right at the whole thing.
Every game I see guys get nastily cross checked without being called. It's pathetic that the league allows this.
