    Default OT - Alberta wildfires

I posted this on my Facebook page. I've been doing contract research for a group up in Alberta for the last six years, and at least some of my colleagues are probably losing their homes to the fires. This video from the Globe and Mail is from the day the evacuation order hit; the weather turned fast, and in this neighborhood they only had a short time to get out. This is scary as heck.

It's unbelievable. We live probably less than 200 miles away (as the crow flies) from Fort McMurray and today were are covered with smoke.

The videos and pictures coming from there are horrific.

Yeah ... my prayers are with those effected. I remember going to central Colorado in the immediate aftermath of their massive wildfire devastation a few years ago and wouldn't wish that on anyone.

If there's a better depiction of hell, I haven't seen it.

are they having a drought? That certainly would be a partial cause and make things worse.

I think the west of Canada had a very warm winter. Like crazy warm. So things are drier at this time of the year than normal. AND they have had really hot temperatures up until recently. it was 27 degrees a couple of days ago and I am pretty sure that's hot for this time of year. Anyway, this coming from a Montrealer... closer but probably not the most accurate.

I have attended our state's wild fire - firefighting school.
When you have high winds forget fighting the fire - think evacuation and keeping your crews safe.

Read that yesterday, excellent read. Really puts things into perspective and humanizes the people of the town. Sure you think "oh those poor people, I feel terrible for them" but It's so easy to forget about the actual individuals with these tragedies.

I am a New Orleans native- born and raised- and although I have been in NC for almost 30 years now, I had family and friends horribly affected by the flooding following Katrina. My sister lost her home. My hometown was devastated and services took years to get up and running. Medical care was piecemeal for many years. Families were split up. Traffic lights took several years to get fully restored. Debris removal took years. When I finally was able to go home six months after the storm hit, I stood in areas of the city that looked war ravaged. It was painful and humbling to look at blocks after blocks of homes and businesses destroyed.

I hope the folks of Ft. McMurray are not screwed over by the insurance industry in the same way those affected by the floods and storm were. I hope the residents are not low balled and that the insurance industry does not try and weasel out of paying home and business owners by labeling something as an act of god. I also hope that the folks in Canada and elsewhere are patient and don't complain because they're tired of hearing about Ft. McMurray . Like most disaster areas, I can only imagine that Ft. McMurray will find the rebuild a challenge and that it will take years and years of effort-- and very likely will not be the same as it was before.
