2016-17 Champions League

Juve right now look fairly likely to defend their way all the way to the Finals, if not the trophy. They haven't given up a goal in freaking forever in CL and have faced some fairly stiff competition. They're basically shutting people out for fun.

They gave up 2 goals in the Group Stage, 1 to Lyon and 1 to Sevilla. That's it for the entire tournament.

The semi-final draw gives us the Madrid Derby and Juventus v. Monaco. It's the 4th year in a row that Atletico and Real Madrid have met in the UCL including last year's final

Real Madrid v. Atletico Madrid - May 2 and 10
Monaco v. Juventus - May 3 and 9

Yeah. It would look too FIFA-ish if they drew out yet another possible Madrid derby final. Interesting to see if Juve can shut down that Monaco offense ... which has looked brutally efficient against some pretty stout defenses thus far.

In a mild upset, Juventus gave up a goal today. But they still beat Monaco 2-1 and advance to the final on a 4-1 aggregate.

Atletico 2-1 Real Madrid. Real Madrid advance 4-2 on aggregate.

Atletico had a 2-0 lead and injected a little tension but Isco scored in the 42nd minute to get the important away goal. Real are in their 2nd straight final and 15th overall.

Yeah, that Juve/Real matchup was looking likely since the knockout rounds started. Deserving finalists.

In the Europa League Final, Man U beat Ajax 2-0. The win puts them directly in the 2017-18 Champions League Group Stage. It reduces the Premier League to 2 teams in the Europa League. Arsenal goes directly to the Group Stage, Everton is in the 3rd qualifying round. Man U also becomes the 5th club to win all 3 major continental trophies, the Champions League, the Europa League and the Cup Winners' Cup. Juventus, Bayern Munich, Ajax and Chelsea are the others.

Juventus 1-4 Real Madrid

Juve had surrendered 3 goals all tournament, Real Madrid scored that many in the 2nd half, turning a tight match at halftime into a laugher. Real Madrid had 56% possession for the match but it felt like more in the 2nd half; Juve never had the ball.

Ugh. Fun first half but then ... ugh. Juve's defense got badly stretched and really just flat out failed in the second frame. Madrid had a lot of luck working the flank opposite of CR7 until they get that back 3+2 to start to bend a little, then it just turned into a track meet.
