Checkers lost their first two to start the season, vs Texas. 6-2 and 4-2. Looking at their lineup, it is painfully evident we still are not that stocked talent wise. Francis and Co (and previous) have done quite a bit in a short time, but there is still a ways to go. As much as I think PDG merits a full time job in the NHL, in the top 9, if we aren't gonna play him, Charlotte could sorely use him.

Yeah ... remember, because of the size of the Canes camp, that Checkers group was REALLY late coming together and we traded away their Captain at the last possible minute. They're going to take some time to gel. I don't think it's a bad AHL roster by any means.

Cherkers won their first game last Friday night....8-3 and then dropped the Saturday game 2-1. So they sit 1-3-0 after 4 games. Poturalski had 4 points (2 goals and 2 assists) and was +4 in the win Friday night. Nedelkjovic has started 3 out of the 4 games and has 3 losses. He was pulled in the first game of the year after allowing 4 goals in 20 minutes. He's seemed to settle down since then.

As for our other minor league goalies, Daniel Altshuller is in Florida and appears to be behind Anthony Peters there. Alltshuller is probably going to find himself elsewhere after this season with Callum Booth out of underage junior eligibility and needing playing time somewhere for the 17-18 season. Helvig and Lafontaine are also in the pipeline, with Helvig arriving in 18-19 and Lafontaine potentially leaving school for the 18-19 season (or even the 17-18 season, hard to tell with these kids sometimes). It will be interesting to see how long Lafontaine remains with Michigan if he has a big season this year. While you have to give Nedelkjovic the edge as our 'top goalie prospect' at the moment, I have a feeling Lafontaine might suddenly emerge as a contender for that title after this season.

FWIW, I liked the movement I saw from both Booth and Helvig in camp. They have a lot of rough edges, but they both move very well in their crease. Altshuller for my money has always looked like a guy playing with ankle weights on.

Cherkers won both of their games this weekend (first 2 home games). 4-2 and 3-. Leighton got the shutout in the 2nd game and also won the first game of the weekend. Leighton's shutout adds one more to his AHL record (now at 47 shutouts) McGinn (2), Tolchinsky, Lowe with the goals in the first game, Ryan (2) and Zykov the goals in the 2nd game.

BTW ... at this stage of his career, if Leighton isn't absolutely rocking it in the A, then he's just lost it.

True dat. And lest anybody forget he's 35, on the tail end of his career. (He has played I believe a combined 3 NHL games in the last 6 years.)

2010-11 - 1 game
2012-13 - 1 game
2015-16 - 1 game - and he only played 39 minutes of it, so it was probably in relief.

Good to see Kuokkanen making a quick transition to the O. Hope he turns out to be yet another in a string of good 2nd round picks going back to 2010.

Wouldn't mind seeing Zykov get a game or two working on the RW of any of our lines. Not sure if his game fully compliments, but solid down low, hard to move, good hands and shot, not huge but coming in at 6 foot. I mean, if he's ready, who knows, might provide more chemistry and give us more production from a forward, a winger, a right winger... ahem Lindholm can have a seat? Or Brock is given a try somehow/who sits?
