    Yup.

Either way the Habs have to get this done. IMO he is our best forward. The guy makes it happen whoever you put him with *looks at Max and Chucky*

I just did this exercise, because some of you need to be reminded of the risks of signing a 31 year old to term:

(Hint, there's a lot of trends here)

    Player A

    2015-2016 (Age 31)

    78GP 25G 21A 46PTS (82GP 26G 22A 48PTS)

    2016-2017 (Age 32)

    78GP 23G 8A 31PTS (82GP 24G 9A 33PTS)

    Player B

    2015-2016 (Age 32)

    81GP 20G 32A 52PTS

    2016-2017 (Turning 33 next week)

    79GP 17G 24A 41 PTS (82GP 18G 25A 43PTS)

    Player C

    2015-2016 (Age 32)

    79GP 21G 24A 45PTS (82GP 22G 25A 47PTS)

    2016-2017 (Age 33)

    74GP 17G 21A 38PTS (82GP 19G 23A 41PTS)

    Player D

    2015-2016 (Age 28)

    79GP 22G 42A 64PTS (82GP 23G 43A 66PTS)

    2016-2017 (Age 29)

    65GP 19G 26A 45PTS (82GP 24G 33A 55PTS)

    Player E

    2015-2016 (Age 31)

    82GP 18G 21A 39PTS

    2016-2017 (Turning 32)

    74GP 13G 12A 25PTS (82GP 14G 13A 27PTS)

*Note, Player E had a superb playoffs which brought up his bargaining power

    Player F

    2015-2016 (Age 28)

    81GP 20G 35A 55PTS

    2016-2017 (Age 29)

    82GP 23G 27A 50PTS

    Player G

    2015-2016 (Age 31)

    80GP 30G 33A 63PTS (82GP 30G 34A 64PTS)

    2016-2017 (Age 32)

    65GP 11G 13A 24PTS (82GP 14G 16A 30PTS)

All of these players are either in or about to be in their early thrties, all signed big deals as UFAs on July 1st last summer, and all are candidates for the annual "Top 10 Worst Contracts in The NHL!" lists, with maybe the exception of Player D. Some contracts, like player F, hasn't seen his production drop off all that much, but then when you consider that he was signed to play as the main winger for this season's soon-to-be-named Hart winner, it does seem a little disappointing, doesn't it?

Player A signed a contract of $5.50M AAV for 7 years.
Player B signed a contract of $5.25M AAV for 6 years.
Player C signed a contract of $6.00M AAV for 5 years.
Player D signed a contract of $6.00M AAV for 7 years.
Player E signed a contract of $4.50M AAV for 4 years.
Player F signed a contract of $6.00M AAV for 7 years.
Player G signed a contract of $6.00M AAV for 6 years.

I'll give you seven guesses as to which one is Andrew Ladd, Frans Nielsen, David Backes, Kyle Okposo, Troy Brouwer, Milan Lucic & Loui Eriksson. (Hey, they just might all be in that order)

Those of you willing to give term & $ to Radulov, what makes you think things will be all that different with him as opposed to these guys?
Elite goaltending will hide a lot of a bad team's flaws and make them look a lot better than they truly are. That's why Carey Price is the single most important player to his team in the NHL.

Hossa, Jagr, Thornton, Marleau... Who IMO play a more similar game to Radulov than Ladd, Lucic, Brouwer, Backes. Not to mention that Radulov also has some easy miles on him playing non-contact KHL.

Either way, if they can negotiate a shorter term so be it. If not, you gotta pay, the window is closing.

Probably, yes. Maybe with the exception of Okposo. However that's not relevant to my point.

My point is, the vast majority of players start to decline when they hit 30 years old. Some start to decline even before that. Take every single top UFA from last summer - every single one minus Boedker are listed in my post - and all of their production dropped without exception.

    This is not a coincidence.

Out of the top 50 scorers in the NHL this season, only 8 were aged 30 or older. Out of the top 100, only 20 were aged 30 or older.

Giving out term to older players is usually a low percentage probability of success. H4L listed 4 players - all four of which are headed to the HHOF, btw - as exceptions, but I gave you 7 players from just last summer.

The NHL's become a young man's game. Giving out term and $ to Radulov is a terrible idea.
Elite goaltending will hide a lot of a bad team's flaws and make them look a lot better than they truly are. That's why Carey Price is the single most important player to his team in the NHL.

Btw, another prized free agent from two summers ago, Matt Beleskey. 5 years, $3.8M AAV.

    How's he doing again?

    2014-2015 (Age 27)

    65GP 22G 10A 32PTS (82GP 28G 13A 41PTS)

    2015-2016 (Age 28)

    80GP 15G 22A 37PTS

    2016-2017 (Age 29)

    49GP 3G 5A 8PTS (82GP 5G 8A 13PTS)

Or if some of you want to look in our own backyard, how's Plekanec's contract going for us? Not too well, huh?

Beleskey was always shit though. One outlier in a contract year does not make him comparable to Radulov in any way.

He had one season with a super high shooting percentage. He wasn't a scorer before that year and isn't a scorer afterwards. Its not a surprise.
