The Weber situation

Well here we are folks.

The "all in" deal that shipped out Subban for Weber failed and we are now left picking up the peices.

Weber just turned 32 years old and Father Time will continue to regress.

He had an OK season with 40 some odd points, which was helped by early season PP success. In 5 on 5 situations he was pretty average. However, frankly we need him to get more than 40 points to justify his contract and we definitely need him to not have consecutive playoff games with 0 shots. With our scoring issue we simply can't have a player that is becoming more and more a stay at home PP specialist (keep in mind how bad our PP was at the end of the season) taking up all this cap room. We need offence and it's probably not gonna come from him.

So in a nutshell - his cap hit is a pretty big issue for this team and it will get worse as each year goes by.

So what do we do? As we learned from the Clarkson situation terrible contracts can be moved and Weber is light years better than Clarkson.

Any thoughts how we can move him and which team might be interested?

The problem with the PK trade was, we needed to get 2 stud prospects back. Instead, we got an older vet. This team is THIN with high level prospects. I look at our prospect pool compared to other teams and I see us near the bottom.

Ideally, you trade Weber for 2 high end young players, but that's not going to happen. Everything you want to happen that will set back this team for 3-4 years and allow us to come back stronger will not happen. We will continue to do patch work, and have first/2nd round exists in the hope we get further. We finished first this year, so how much better can we do during the regular season? Come playoff time, the Markovs disappear and actually hurt us, and it's like we forget how to score.

So, do you realistically see this team moving Weber? That would be a domino effect, and it wouldn't make much sense unless we dump Max and some other vets too. Ever since I have been on these forums, I have continually said that ownership is always looking to make money first and foremost. Rebuilding is only good for us fans, not for this business though. I honestly don't even think the fans here have the patience for it also. They rather just say 'next year', that's been the motto since '93, until we end up without a cup for 50 years, maybe then things will change.

Markov, Chara, Pronger, the list goes on

You can make an argument that Markov'a cap hit has impacted us. But it's no where near as crippling as Weber's is.

Chara's cap has definitely impacted Bostons ability to move forward. They've missed the playoffs 2 of the last 3 years.

Isn't Pronger still on the Flyers payroll?

Basically those names support the argument that massive aging cap hits aren't great ideas.

Brad is right. If you move Weber, Price will walk after next season - the rebuild writing will be on the wall and he wants a Cup.

The Habs next big move needs to be done very, very carefully. Before worrying about Weber, Bergevin needs to shown the door.

It's one thing to show MB the door but who is his capable replacement? Julien Brisebois would be another rookie in a snake pit known as Mtl - great training ground for his potential success elsewhere.
This situation calls for a proven championship caliber team builder - need the NHLs version of Pat Gillick....not sure who that is.
Dean Lombardi's the only name that comes to mind, not sure that's the right path to follow though.

I don't know. Would take tampering penalty - this is no time to be weenies.

I don't think freeing up nearly 8 million in cap space is "rebuild" - it can be retool forsure. You can probably get a 40 point d-man somewhere for cheaper and for less years.

What teams would be interested in Weber? Thoughts?

If the Habs trade Webber, they will go from a top-heavy D with challenges in the top 4 to one that is pure crap that will struggle to make the playoffs in the short run which also coincides with the expiration of Price's contract. Why would he want to stay with mediocrity or outright duds (bad case) or a couple of kids with potential (good case)?

You have to look at the contract situation for the whole roster - Beregevin has managed to paint himself into a corner.

6 is the least of our problems and was one of 3 players who showed up in the series , no issues whatsoever.

NEWS FLASH: We are not winning a cup with Weber or PK , or Hedman , Burns , Doughty , OEL ......take your pick .

We dont have enough talent and testosterone to go any further than we did this series .

In a perfect world you acquire 6 to play with 76 ,but the trade made no difference to the overall win outcome .

As for the cap hit BS ....76 has a higher cap hit and once his NTC kicked in his value dropped by 50% when he has our GM by the balls dictating his next destination.

Smashville has the cap recapture penalty not us or the acquiring team if we move him ,and 6 will be in demand on a contender anytime down the road .

This all in mode is crap , we were doomed in any scenario the rebuild was coming any way you slice it .

Trade him back to Nashville for more grit....Shaw type player, or Benn type player.

There is situation but it involves what passes for your brain, not Weber.

PKs cap hit ends in 5 years. He's 27.

Webers cap hit the ends in 9 years. He's 32.

If we don't move Webers contract in the next year or two, we many never be able to.

All I care about is playoff wins , in 3 years time 6 can be moved with Nashville paying about 25 mil in cap penalties.

By then a 31 year old PK playing for us with a squad that cant win is the same result . Now you have a 9 mil cap hit with a NTC in our face .

Its the same end result =PLAYOFF FAILURE
