Doubt it, they were clearly loading up on D to flip.
If they were willing to take Emelin, they were surely willing to take better D with Cheaper Contracts. Benn and Beaulieu both have more trade value than Emelin (all else being equal ie traded post draft with teams not needing to use a protection slot on them). We'll never know since Benn won't be traded and Beaulieu was traded in different circumstances.
