Big day for Celtic. They could really use the funds from a round of Europa League games.

Well ... Celtic lost on an own goal and played like garbage, but it was enough to get two Europa League paychecks.

Dortmund turned the Group of Death into an anticlimax. I know they've had their struggles in the Bundesliga but they're not in really bad shape there, certainly nothing compared to being unable to forge a result against APOEL, who were pretty awful.

Also, those are some pretty good sides dropping to the Euro league. Providing some of them take an interest in the competition, Arsenal's going to have to find a way to nick 4th in the PL if they want back in the CL next year.

Yeah, but it's not like Dortmund played all that poorly, aside from that early loss to Spurs when they looked completely disorganized. They played their game, at least and that 3-2 loss to Real Madrid was one of the better matches I've seen this season. They just couldn't get over the hump.

The knockout stage draw was held today.

Juventus v. Spurs
Basel v. Man City
Porto v. Liverpool
Sevilla v. Man U
Real Madrid v. PSG
Shakhtar v. Roma
Chelsea v. Barcelona
Bayern Munich v. Besiktas

Chelsea gets punished for not winning their group. They couldn't face a PL club or the team that won their group, so they were going to draw Barcelona, PSG or Besiktas.

First legs to be played 2/13-14 or 2/20-21. Second legs to be played 3/6-7 or 3/13-14.

Meh. If they play their game and stay patient, Chelsea can do Barca.

Honestly, Barca fans are probably more disappointed about that draw. They've had lots of issues with Chelsea in the CL including the final Barca won which they are definitely aware was gifted to them by the referee.

Speaking of the Europa League, teams of local interest in the round of 32.

Arsenal drew Ostersunds from Sweden. The club was founded the year Arsene Wenger took over as Arsenal's manager. This is only their 2nd year in the top Swedish league.

Celtic drew Zenit St. Petersburg.

There are 4 Russian clubs in the round of 32, Lokomotiv Moscow, Spartak Moscow and CSKA Moscow are the others, the latter 2 dropping in from the UCL. Italy has 4 clubs, Atalanta, Lazio and AC Milan coming through from the Europa League Napoli dropping down from the UCL. With Everton losing in the group stage, only Arsenal is around to defend England's UEFA coefficient.

Ostersunds have a British manager and several British players ... their matchup with Arsenal should be interesting, although probably lopsided.

Speaking of lopsided, Celtic will more than have their hands full with Zenit. Of all the Russian teams to draw, they had to get the one with actual speed. Not a great matchup for a Celtic team that really relies on their speed on the wings on the counter-attack.

Champions League knockout stage started today:

Today:
Basel v. Man City
Juventus v. Spurs

Wednesday:
Porto v. Liverpool
Real Madrid v. PSG

Juve and Spurs drew on 2 goals apiece, but City blasted Basel 4-0. I'm trying to carve out a bit of time to watch that Madrid/PSG match today if possible.

Today's results:

The empty shirts wearing a Porto badge 0-5 Liverpool - Mane with a hat trick
Real Madrid 3-1 PSG

Madrid an PSG was a bit of a damp squib, I must say. I got bored and moved on to other stuff.

The other half of the knockout round starts today:

Today:
Bayern Munich v. Besiktas
Chelsea v. Barcelona

Tomorrow:
Sevilla v. Man U
Shakhtar Donetsk v. Roma

Bayern Munich 5-0 Besiktas
Chelsea 1-1 Barcelona
Sevilla 0-0 Man U
Shakhtar Donetsk 2-1 Roma

After RM took PSG apart, I really want to see them up against City. Preferably in the next round.
