2017-18 Premier League Thread

Match Week 2. Only 1 of the 10:00 Saturday matches is on linear TV, you'll need the subscription for any of the others

FWIW, NBC's Gold Streaming package is just under 50 bucks for the season. I mean ... it ain't free but it's not highway robbery either.

True, when you compare it to the Sunday Ticket, Center Ice, etc. It's even cheaper than a full season subscription to MLS Live. But those were always subscription based. Moving from free to subscription, regardless of how reasonable the price is, opens the network up to criticism.

Wrapping up the 2nd weekend...

Swansea 0-4 Man U
Bournemouth 0-2 Watford
Burnley 0-1 West Brom
Leicester 2-0 Brighton
Liverpool 1-0 Crystal Palace
Southampton 3-2 West Ham
Stoke 1-0 Arsenal
Huddersfield 1-0 Newcastle
Spurs 1-2 Chelsea

After scoring 4 goals in a game once all of last season, Man U has done it twice this year while keeping 2 clean sheets. Man U blew the match open with goals in the 80th, 82nd and 84th minutes. Huddersfield and West Brom have also kept 2 clean sheets. The Bet365 Stadium continues to be Arsenal's house of horrors, losing there for the 5th time in 9 PL matches. Spurs Wembley woes continue as they got their only goal on an own goal in the 82nd minute but Marcos Alonso won it late for Chelsea.

Still have City and Everton left over on 8/21.

True

Man City 1-1 Everton

Everton have scored 2 goals this season, Rooney has both, scoring in the 35th minute today. It was his 200th Premier League goal, joining Alan Shearer as the only players with at least 200. City played the 2nd half with 10 men after Kyle Walker was sent off on his home debut for picking up 2 cards in the span of 2 minutes just before halftime. Sterling got the equalizer in the 82nf minute. Everton also finished with 10 as Schneiderlin was sent off in the 88th.

Short on scoring true, but their system play on D looks pretty doggone good. Toffees just need to round into form with the ball in the final third. Otherwise they look darned good.

Match week 3. Once again, only 1 of the 10:00 eastern time matches is on linear TV but both early Sunday matches are.

Saturday:
Bournemouth v. Man City 7:30/12:30 NBCSN
Newcastle v. West Ham 10:00/15:00 NBCSN
Crystal Palace v. Swansea
Huddersfield v. Southampton
Watford v. Brighton

Sunday:
Chelsea v. Everton 8:30/13:30 NBCSN
West Brom v. Stoke CNBC

Spurs v. Burnley

Recapping the weekend:

Bournemouth 1-2 Man City
Crystal Palace 0-2 Swansea
Huddersfield 0-0 Southampton
Newcastle 3-0 West Ham
Watford 0-0 Brighton
Man U 2-0 Leicester
Chelsea 2-0 Everton
West Brom 1-1 Stoke
Liverpool 1,000-0 Arsenal
Spurs 1-1 Burnley

The real score in Liverpool/Arsenal was 4-0, it just felt like 1,000-0. Arsenal were in the match for about 3 minutes and it all turned to the brown stuff. Wenger got everything wrong about the match. Wrong tactics, wrong team selection, evertything. Man U and Huddersfield still haven't allowed a goal, Brgton and Crystal Palace haven't scored yet. Spurs Wembley woes continue, they gave up a 92nd minute equalizer to Chris Wood to allow Burnley to draw. Crazy ending in Bournemouth with Raheem Sterling getting the winner in the 97th minute and picking up his second yellow moments later for going into the crowd to celebrate. It's really not fair to say he went into the crowd, they came to him; the stewards couldn't keep the City fans off the pitch after Sterling scored in their end. Guardiola spent most of the original 5 minutes of stoppage time complaining to the 4th official. There were 11 yellow cards in that match.

There is an international break on the weekend for World Cup qualifiers, next matches are the weekend of 9/9.

The international break is over, it's time for match week 4.

Watford 0-6 Man City
Newcastle 2-1 Stoke
Liverpool 1-1 Burnley
Huddersfield 1-1 Leicester
Spurs 0-0 Swansea
Chelsea 0-0 Arsenal
Man U 4-0 Everton

New manager, same result for Crystal Palace. They have lost all 5 matches and haven't scored a goal yet, setting a First Division record for longest goal-less streak to start a season. Spurs league woes at Wembley continue, they're 0-1-2 with 2 goals scored in 3 matches. Arsenal/Chelsea was an entertaining match for a 0-0 draw. Arsenal broke a 5 match losing streak at the Bridge. David Luiz was sent off on a straight red in the 87th minute for a studs up tackle on Sead Kolasinic. Man U exploded for 3 goals in the last 7 minutes to put the match away. Rooney was subbed off in the 82nd minute, just before the goal explosion.

Wrapping up the weekend:

Swansea 1-2 Watford
Stoke 0-4 Chelsea
Southampton 0-1 Man U
Man City 5-0 Crystal Palace
Everton 2-1 Bournemouth
Burnley 0-0 Huddersfield
Leicester 2-3 Liverpool
Brighton 1-0 Newcastle
Arsenal 2-0 West Brom

With his start for West Brom yesterday, Gareth Barry passed Ryan Giggs to become the all time Premier League appearance maker. He already had the records for most minutes played, most starts and most yellow cards. In his 633 appearances, he's only been used as a sub 32 times.

Crystal Palace has now gone 6 matches in the league without scoring. They're tied with West Ham for most conceded too. Their road doesn't get any easier, with a trip to Old Trafford on Saturday and hosting Chelsea after the international break. Man City top the table over Man U on goal differential. Chelsea are 3rd and Spurs, Liverpool and Watford are all tied on 11 points, separated by goal differential. Huddersfield are a somewhat surprising 8th with 2 wins and 3 draws despite having scored only 5 goals. They've only surrendered 3 though, just behind the Manchester clubs.

Match week 7, international break next weekend

Saturday:
Huddersfield v. Spurs 7:30 NBCSN
Man U v. Crystal Palace 10:00 NBCSN
Bournemouth v. Leicester
Stoke v. Southampton
West Brom v. Watford
West Ham v. Swansea
Chelsea v. Man City 12:30 NBCSN

Newcastle v. Liverpool 11:30 NBCSN

After watching some of Arsenal against BATE Borisov yesterday, I am struck by how much their squad situation resembles Liverpool's. Solid skills and scoring ability up front, varying levels of competence in midfield, and hopeless chaos at the back. BATE were so much slower than Arsenal, yet were repeatedly able to threaten. Both Pool and Arsenal are going to drive their supporters insane this year: on their good days, they can dominate; on their bad days, they will look like mediocre Championship sides, at best.

Arsenal started more U23 regulars than Premier League regulars yesterday. It's hard to marshal the defense when they never play or practice together.

Arsenal has driven me insane every year. And every year is a different reason.

I'd argue it's been the same reason the last two or three years, but he's too stubborn to admit it.

Huddersfield 0-4 Spurs
Bournemouth 0-0 Leicester
Man U 4-0 Crystal Palace
Stoke 2-1 Southampton
West Brom 2-2 Watford
West Ham 1-0 Swansea
Chelsea 0-1 Man City
Arsenal 2-0 Brighton
Everton 0-1 Burnley
Newcastle 1-1 Liverpool

Huddersfield had conceded 3 goals in their first 6 matches. Spurs had that many in the first 23 minutes. Crystal Palace still hasn't scored a goal in the league. Think Hodgson regrets coming out of retirement for this group? Everton, ugh...16th place, 4 goals scored in 7 matches. It's not like they're setting the Europa League on fire either.

Headed into the break, Man City and Man U are tied on points, with City 1 goal better. Spurs 5 points back, Chelsea and Arsenal tied on points, Chelsea +3 goals. Burnley (!), Liverpool and Watford are tied on points for 6th separated by goal differential. Newcastle and West Brom complete the top half. Swansea, Bournemouth and Crystal Palace are bottom 3, Swansea is 2 goals worse than Leicester who sit 17th.

The break is over, some clubs saw players injured (Fellaini for one, in a meaningless match).
