2017-18 Miscellaneous News Thread

That's my understanding. They couldn't extend Turris. Too much term and money required to do so.

So Duchene at least kicks the can down the road another year and they see if they can extend him instead.

Duchene's UFA season also coincides with Karlsson's UFA season, so they can Go/No-Go a rebuild or let's keep it going decision.

Duchene is an Ontario native. So maybe a good fit for both parties.

IIRC Jordan Staal signed the exact deal in Carolina that he had turned down in Pittsburgh. Sometimes a GM just has to cut his losses. And that is tough when all the other GMs know you're in a bind.

The Pens really haven't found a good replacement yet since waiving Niemi. Casey DeSmith was ineffective in relief of Matt Murray and only got 42 minutes (4.30 GAA, .800 Sv%). The Pens ended up calling up Tristan Jerry who is their younger hopeful NHL caliber goalie from the AHL and he has managed 2 OT losses in his 2 starts (2.84 GAA .903 Sv%). Its hasn't gone any better for Matt Murray so far (2.98 GAA .903 Sv%). Sidney Crosby only has 15 points in 20 games and is a NHL worst -14.

Rough start for the Pens.

Perspective I guess, but I don't think Pens fans are that dissatisfied with the start. Despite all the negatives you mentioned they are still acquiring points. They have also had the worst schedule to start with as they have played more games than everyone else, including a ton of back to back games with 14 of first 21 games on the road. If thier powerplay wasn't clicking things would look a lot worse as they aren't scoring at even strength.

They look like a team that has played a ton of games the past 2 years and are disinterested in the first part of the season. It will be interesting to see if the upcoming JR December trade to acquire a 3rd line center puts some life back into them or if they are able to flip a switch once the playoffs start?

Radko Gudas was invited to New York to meet with the principal for a slash to Mathieu Perrault's head. He's a documented knuckle dragger who served a 6 game suspension last year.

Red Wings forward Luke Witkowski was suspended 10 games for returning to the ice after he had been removed by the officials, in violation of rule 70.6. The 10 game suspension is embedded in the rule.

Related to the above, Matthew Tkachuk has a hearing with DPS for whacking Witkowski on the leg as the latter was being escorted off the ice.

Definitely the right call on the Witkowski suspension....that is pretty black and white in the rule book.

The thing is, Tkachuk instigated Witkowski returning to the ice. I can only hope the league comes down strongly on Tkachuk as well....not because what he actually did was dangerous, but just out of principle. No one should be allowed to engage another player in any way who has been escorted off the ice by an official, especially one who in this case was starting to walk down a walkway to a dressing room. Tkachuk needs to get at least a 5 game suspension...probably more, for his role. Will that happen? we will see....

A look around the world at how some of our former players are doing:

Eric Staal (NHL MIN) 20 Games 7 Goals 11 Assists +6 *** A little bit better looking numbers than last season. Has been a huge bargain for Minny

Kris Versteeg (NHL CGY) 29 Games 3 Goals 5 Assists -6

Andrej Nestrasil (KHL Nizhnekamsk) 33 Games 6 Goals 13 Assists -7

Riley Nash (NHL BOS) 19 Games 1 Goal 4 Assists -1 *** Still a decent NHL 4th line Penalty killer.

Ron Hainsey (NHL TOR) 22 Games 1 Goal 9 Assists +6 *** Looks like he might significantly exceed my points prediction...heading for over 30 points. My Ron Hainsey stat of the month....Hainsey leads the NHL in Short Handed TOI at 108:06 so far this season (that's 4:54 SH TOI per game). 2nd place is teammate Nikita Zaitsev (87:21 3:58 per game). Closest non-Leaf is Erik Johnson (79:55 4:12)

Chris Terry (AHL Lavel (MTL)) 15 Games 8 Goals 8 Assists -9

Jay McClement (Swiss-SL Olten) 6 Games 0 Goals 2 Assists +3 *** The Swiss-SL is a minor Swiss league

Ryan Murphy (AHL Iowa (MIN) 15 Games 1 Goal 6 Assists -1

Nathan Gerbe (Swiss-A Geneve) 13 Games 1 Goal 4 Assists -4 *** Gerbe also somehow has managed to get 79 PIM He had only 22 in 26 games for Geneve last season, so something major must have happened) Unlike McClement, Gerbe is playing in the top Swiss league.

Brad Malone
(AHL Bakersfield) 8 Games 2 Goals 1 Assist -1
(NHL Edmontont) 7 Games No points Even

James Wisniewski (DEL-2 Kassel) 10 Games 5 Goals 15 Assists +7 *** DEL-2 is the 2nd tier pro league in Germany

Viktor Stalberg (Swiss-A Zug) 22 Games 12 Goals 11 assists

Matt Tennyson (NHL BUF) 14 Games No points -8

Ty Rattie (AHL Bakersfield (EDM) 14 Games 7 Goals 5 Assist -8

Martin Frk (NHL DET) 18 Games 6 Goals 3 Assists -5

Zack Boychuk (KHL Bratislava) 12 Games 3 Goals 8 Assists -3

And finally

Zac Dalpe
(NHL CBJ) 10 Games No points -3
(AHL Cleveland) 1 Game No points +1

Not sure how Dalpe stays in the league but there he is, now at 28, still getting some NHL games in.

If you are wondering about still Canes property but probably never going to be signed Gregory Hofmann:

Gregory Hofmann (Swiss-A Lugano) 16 Games 11 Goals 4 Assists *** Has significantly cooled off. After drafting him in 2011, under the old CBA rules, the Canes have NHL rights to Hofmann for 10 seasons after his draft year, after which if he ever wanted to play in the NHL and any NHL team wanted him, he would be a Group 5 UFA. So the Canes theoretically have Hofmann's rights until 2021. The current CBA forces you to sign your 18 or 19 year old Euro Draft pick by the 4th June after he is drafted (2nd June for Euro players drafted at age 20 or older). So Euro drafted players are no longer tied for 10 seasons to the NHL team that drafted them..as long as they were drafted under the new CBA.

Eddie Lack (NHL CGY) 1-2-0 5.29 GAA .813 Sv% *** Nice work Eddie!!!!

Riley Nash suffered from the same problem as Derek Ryan does now...he was overslotted. He’s a perfectly suitable 4th line penalty killer, can move up in a pinch, wins draws and is a right shot.

Chris Terry should probably go the Zach Boychuk route and see the world while playing hockey. He, like so many before him is a AAA+ player, great in the AHL, borderline NHL player. Dalpe too; despite the few games a year, he’s never going to be a full time NHLer.

Yes, but Russia? Stick with parts of the world where rules of law and sportsmanship hold.

True. It doesn’t have to Russia though. Jared Staal played in Scotland last year. Matt Cullen and Craig Adams played in Italy during the 04-05 lockout. Derek Ryan spent 3 years in Austria.

Switzerland. I'd be all over Switzerland.

I didn't list Khudobin who because of awsome play is keeping a healthy Tukka Rask out of the nets. Khudobin is 6-0-2 with a 2.13 GAA and .938 sv%

Rask is 3-7-2 2.89 GAA .897 Sv%

Lack cleared waivers and was sent to Stockton. There was a train of thought that he might get claimed, since the Canes are on the hook for half of his salary. Cap Friendly tweeted earlier that Calgary only has to carry $350k of his salary on their cap.

No impact to us. I would be suprised if he gets a call.

Matt Duchene got his first point (a goal) last night in 2-1 Sens loss. He was a pointless -10 in the first 7 games with the Sens.

The Devils trade Adam Henrique, Joe Blandisi and a 2018 3rd round pick to the Ducks for Sami Vatanen and a conditional 3rd round pick. The Ducks are thin at center with Kesler, Getzlaf and Rakell all injured. Henrique can become a UFA after next season. If the Ducks re-sign him prior to the 3rd round of the 2019 draft, the Devils get that pick. If they re-sign him after that, the Devils get a 2020 3rd rounder. Blandisi was playing in Binghamton of the AHL. Vatanen is in the 2nd year of a 4 year contract with an AAV of $4.875 million.
