That's my understanding. They couldn't extend Turris. Too much term and money required to do so.

So Duchene at least kicks the can down the road another year and they see if they can extend him instead.

Duchene's UFA season also coincides with Karlsson's UFA season, so they can Go/No-Go a rebuild or let's keep it going decision.

Duchene is an Ontario native. So maybe a good fit for both parties.

IIRC Jordan Staal signed the exact deal in Carolina that he had turned down in Pittsburgh. Sometimes a GM just has to cut his losses. And that is tough when all the other GMs know you're in a bind.

    Rough start for the Pens.
Perspective I guess, but I don't think Pens fans are that dissatisfied with the start. Despite all the negatives you mentioned they are still acquiring points. They have also had the worst schedule to start with as they have played more games than everyone else, including a ton of back to back games with 14 of first 21 games on the road. If thier powerplay wasn't clicking things would look a lot worse as they aren't scoring at even strength.

They look like a team that has played a ton of games the past 2 years and are disinterested in the first part of the season. It will be interesting to see if the upcoming JR December trade to acquire a 3rd line center puts some life back into them or if they are able to flip a switch once the playoffs start?

Radko Gudas was invited to New York to meet with the principal for a slash to Mathieu Perrault's head. He's a documented knuckle dragger who served a 6 game suspension last year.

Red Wings forward Luke Witkowski was suspended 10 games for returning to the ice after he had been removed by the officials, in violation of rule 70.6. The 10 game suspension is embedded in the rule.

Related to the above, Matthew Tkachuk has a hearing with DPS for whacking Witkowski on the leg as the latter was being escorted off the ice.

Definitely the right call on the Witkowski suspension....that is pretty black and white in the rule book.

The thing is, Tkachuk instigated Witkowski returning to the ice. I can only hope the league comes down strongly on Tkachuk as well....not because what he actually did was dangerous, but just out of principle. No one should be allowed to engage another player in any way who has been escorted off the ice by an official, especially one who in this case was starting to walk down a walkway to a dressing room. Tkachuk needs to get at least a 5 game suspension...probably more, for his role. Will that happen? we will see....
