Playing with tavares a whole season, marner should and will get close to the 90 point plateau.
If he doesnt sign this season, he may get more time with kadri and other lines besides the matthews line cause If he does hit 90 points, why wouldnt he want, and ask for 10 million for 7 seasons.
I will bet that there would be at least a few teams that would pay him that money, even uf it meant losing a few draft picks.
Old lou must be watching this from is ny office, just waiting for the chance to jump all over that scenario if it happens.

So out of curiousity, other than a hot half, how exactly has Marner been that much better than Nylander? Even if we stick with stupid stats (the advanced stats favour Nylander) it's still 130 points over 2 seasons to 122 points over two seasons.

Like I said, if we just track stupid stats over the last 2 years:

    Nylander: 42G, 122PTS
    Marner: 41G, 130PTS
    Ehlers: 54G, 124PTS
    Pastrnak: 59G, 150PTS

Even if Mitch "bets on himself", there still won't end up a very good argument for him making more than Pastrnak + cap inflation.

Its the hot half. If Marner can do that for a whole season that's worth a lot of money. He pushes himself out of that big group of 60ish point second contract guys. Including the playoffs he score 46 points in his last 40 games.

Tarasenko, Draisaitl and Eichel never had a 95 point season before signing. The best comp for that is McDavid.

Dont forget that nylander has had matthews on his line for a fair amount of his time here.
Marner has played with bozak and kadri. Both these guys have their strengths, but who would you rather have as your centerman?

Also pastrnak played with marchant and beregeron alot. I think that if he played on a line with what marner has had to, these past two season, his points total wouldn't be as high as they are.
Give mitch a 1a centerman, and a winger with some offensive abilities, and as i have mentioned many times here, he will finish in the top 10 scoring in this league

    Yep, that's the thing.

Right now---he's absolutely in the same general compensation tier as guys like Nylander & Ehlers, and he's somewhere behind Pastrnak.

But if he goes out next year and puts up an 85-95 point season, which I think he's perfectly capable of doing, then his agents will have a good case that he's on an altogether different level than any of those guys and deserves to be paid accordingly.

Yup. If he gets 85+, then suddenly he starts looking more like the good Kane, and less like the bad Kane. If he hits 90, then there's a very legit argument that he should be paid in the Eichel tier.

He really should not sign now - there's very few situations in which he would sign for less than whatever the presumed Leafs offer right now would be. But will be interesting to see if Leafs management can convince him to sign now.

When Marner played with Kadri he was over PPG. What if he'd played with Matthews?

For sure, and from a $$ perspective, I'd hold off signing this year if I were Marner and see what kind of # he can put up next season, with Tavares.

But Marner is also the local kid of the trio, and grew up as a Leaf fan. IF Matthews and Nylander are both signing this season, then that may be enough to get Marner to also sign this year, making sure the trio can stay together for long term.

At least we can hope so.

You seem a touch too enthusiastic about that.

I don't know what the appropriate level of enthusiasm would be, but mine seemed reasonable under the circumstances.

To be fair, who was Marner playing with ES vs PP usage?

I'm curious about the answer to this too.

After looking it up, Marner's most common linemates at 5-on-5 last year:

...and his most common linemates on the power-play:

So at five-on-five, he split his time pretty evenly between JVRzak & Marleau/Kadri. And then almost all of his power-play time was spent with JVRzak plus Kadri.
