No, this is worse. Clarkson was an UFA, Wilson isn't. Clarkson did come off (on pace) 30G season. That's almost as bad as the Clarkson deal.
At least Wilson's younger than Clarkson was, but in the first four years of his career his highest goal total was 7, and he cracked the 20-point barrier once with 23 points. Then he spent the overwhelming majority of this past season playing either with Ovi/Backstrom or Ovi/Kuznetsov, and he scored less than Zach Hyman did this season.
That's how you kill your cap. By falling in love with the supporting pieces around your star players.
The Evander Kane deal is more or less identical to the JVR deal, except Kane is better and younger than JVR.
Wilson is 24. The biggest problem with the clarkson deal was that he was a 30 year old ufa.
Note good deal for the caps but they bought up his prime years, not the old broken ones.
Would love to hear how E Kane is better than JVR.
JVR is an established 30G 60Pts winger,
Kane has never scored 30G,
and hasn't even come close to 60 pts
and can't stay healthy.
The problem with Wilson is not he's 24, the problem is he's a 3rd liner.
Imagine giving a 24 year old Komarov $5M x 6 yrs deal to 'buy off his prime years' .... even his prime years will never come close to be worth $5M per.
It seems to be a common affliction among NHL GM's to overreact to Cup wins or even just playoff success, and disproportionately reward their playoff heroes. But this really is taking it to the next level.I;m confused how Wilson had that much ammo to get that deal?
Scores at similar rates in actual big boy usage.
If by "established 60 point winger" you mean that he's done it twice in his career, sure. If by "established 30 goal winger" you mean that he's also done it twice, sure.
Wrong Bobo. If you're just going to make shit up.....
In what world is 57 & 54 not close to 60?
Guilty as charged. Has been better over the last 2 seasons though, playing 78 & 70 games respectively. Scored 29 & 28 goals in those seasons as well (82 game pace of 30 & 33) .
So yeah, a guy who scores almost as much as JVR, but doesn't do it in crazy sheltered usage. Also plays fairly angry if that's your thing (I generally dislike hits as a statistic, but JVR registered 40 last season, to Kane's 159) and can fight.
I know who I would rather have on my team. The the sheltered specialist who is pussy soft, or the guy who is pretty good across 3 zones, plays with an edge and scores almost as much.
