Who was Columbus trying to protect by paying a king’s ransom for them to take Karlsson?

I don't know all the specifics but they had some strange timing on their moves - I'm talking about buying out Hartnell's contract AFTER the expansion draft. If they had bought out his contract a few weeks earlier, there would be one additional player they could protect (say, Karlsson for example).

Vegas is gonna get a gassed team.

My theory of winning Cups is doing it with as few games played going into the final. I don't think I can remember a team having a better setup than Vegas does now. The intensity of tonights game was astounding. Game seven should be a war.

Reports that Kane signed 7x7 with the Sharks

Attitude aside, he's a better player than JVR and younger.
How?

He's a couple years younger than JVR, and more physical.

But as far as offensive production goes, JVR blows him out of the water over the last six years. There's also the matter of Kane having been an extremely injury-prone player for pretty much his entire career, while JVR has only missed more than two games in a season once over the past six seasons.

Anyway, this is proof positive of what a lot of us having been saying all along. 7 X 7 is pretty much JVR's floor on the open market.

Same amount of points this year playing most of the year on a worse team without tissue soft usage. Excellent possession stats. He's better. JVR does way less on the ice than Kane does.

Kane may be a better all-around player, but I'm not sure if that makes up for the difference in offensive production, and the difference in durability.

JVR is fool’s gold. Someone will severely overpay for him IMO, I have zero interest
While I have no interest in the Leafs signing him, I don't think he'll necessarily turn out badly for whoever signs him.

I mean, I guess it depends on the situation---if a team bereft of offensive talent signs him to be their savior, it'll be a catastrophe.

But if a team signs him to add to a nucleus of good offensive players, I wouldn't be surprised if he continues to pop in 25-30 goals & 50-60 points for the majority of his next contract.

And, of course, whether or not you can win anything paying JVR $7M+ per season is another question. But I think he'll at least provide value.

The one concern of the team giving JVR a 7 year deal for 6-7 million is that they will be compelled to play him more 5 on 5 minutes, which won't end well. Babs had him as a 3rd liner and PP specialist.
