2017-18 Miscellaneous Canes News Thread

The Atlantic (subscription only) has the Canes with the #4 farm system in the league. Pronmon lists Svetch as an "Elite NHL Prospect," Necas as a "High end NHL Prospect", then Kuokkenan, Fox and Roy rounding out our top 5. Gauthier and Bean are also considered Legit NHL prospects. Zykov at 12 and McKeown felt pretty pessimistic to me but ultimately it's a glowing review of the system. What a boon it was to have Svetch handed to us, huh?

Looks like they are on the same page as Sports Illustrated, which--as discussed earlier in this thread at http://www.forumice.com/showthread....Thread&p=2997351&highlight=#post2997351--also ranked us at #4.

Yeah ... that was the kind of thing that can turn the tide. I think most of us have felt for awhile that the Canes have done a good enough job of building up their development pipeline with bread and butter players. But the big fish were few and far between. With Svechnikov and Necas following closely on the heels of Aho, the Canes have finally gotten an infusion of top shelf offensive talent that has been lacking for a long, long time.

Thoughts on the players ratings ... interesting to me how down Pronman is on Gaulthier after only one pro season, relative to expectations. Big boys sometimes take time to take that step from junior to pro, and they rarely see big success straight out of the gate. Patience is required with that one I think. Bean also gets a pretty meh review, despite a fairly high dose of local optimism. I was also interested to see how high he was on Roy, who is not a player I've ever been all that impressed with ... not that my opinion means anything. Otherwise, from the guys I've seen in person enough to make a judgement on, I'm in general agreement with the comments.

And if I have any one focus with the Canes development program for this season, it's that they MUST keep guys like Geekie and Pu at CENTER even if it means slotting them down a notch on the organizational chart. WAY too often over the past decade, the Canes have bailed early on guys who might well have turned out to be proper centers if the club had managed some patience. As a consequence that cupboard is ridiculously bare at the NHL level.

from alexander on twitter:

Centennial Authority authorizes spending up to $2.4 million on a 3D projection system for PNC Arena, and up to $930,000 on a theatrical lighting system. Won't be ready for Hurricanes, NC State openers but could be operational in December

Now someone can explain what a 3D system is for that size building

also in case anyone cares, Chantel McCabe now reports for the Golf Channel.

Revisiting the discussion on The Athletic: George Richards, longtime Panthers beat writer and recently with the Blue Jackets just announced he's leaving the Columbus Dispatch (without announcing his next stop). The Canes are the only NHL team now without a beat writer at The Athletic; the Coyotes were on that list also but just got one recently. I'll play along like all the NHL media in trade speculation and call the 1+1=2 here... or at least I can hope.

EDIT: Dang, Richards went back to the Panthers beat, but with @TheAthleticMIA , so I guess I was 50% on my call and @TheAthleticCAR is still lacking a Canes writer.
