He was going on and on about how he was done with the leafs cause they fired Burke. As if Burke was some sort of God that it was impossible to doubt him.

Except, of course, when the faithful here were proclaiming him the messiah when the Leafs hired him...

Guilty as charged. We were stuck with an ownership group that was shortsighted. The only way we could have pushed MLSE aside, embraced tanking (like I wanted to), draft well, and go for the cup as opposed to just wanting to take in a round or two, was to have a strong personality on board.

Burke was as strong a personality as I could have hoped for. He sounded like he had a clear vision too.

Then it started to going downhilll. When he had that Pittsburgh won the lottery presser, it became clear that he really wasn't a fan of tanking.

I still stuck with him though thinking he is standing up to MLSE and maybe his vision could take us to the cup without having to tank.

Eventually, with Biggs, Komi, Toskalol, etc. etc. etc. he proved to be a fraud.

And now his team again traded a lottery pick without protecting it. It's insane.

You guys say it was insane to do that now. But I was crying about it at the time, and being told by everyone to wipe away those tears.

Yeah, I defended the Kessel trade to the death. Like Burke, I expected our team to be better than 30th & 23rd overall for the two years we traded our picks. And Burke really was an idiot with the no lottery protection.

If he top-3 or even top-5 protected those picks, does Chiarelli say no? Probably not.

Based on the other things we've seen Chiarelli do since then, I might even believe that Burke offered the third draft pick rather than Chiarelli insisting on it.

They're both so stupid, as it turns out.

I've told the story a dozen times by now, but when I met Burke and asked him whether it was permitted to have lottery protected the picks, I was fully expecting him to say something to the effect that there was some rule against it (because there was some debate about it here at the time).

But he was like, yup, could've done it! Defiant - like he was ****ing proud to have not done so! I didn't even know what to say in response. At that point, he started making fun of a buddy of mine in a Leaf jersey and teasing that he looked like Carlton the Bear.

Given what we've seen from Chiarelli since that trade, I'm guessing he could have been had for a much lesser package.

My recollection is that, given the contract we signed Phil to, had we simply offer sheeted him it would have cost us less. But I could be misremembering.

I was a huge proponent of the trade at the time, and looking back I stand by the positions I took. Obviously us finishing last changed things, but given our roster and performance in previous seasons I don't think it was unreasonable to expect the trade to be a win for us.

I'm pretty sure I bitched about giving up those picks until I was voted off the island, but it was a long time ago so I could be misremembering it.
