No team in NHL history was granted the gift that Las Vegas was.
They entered as the only expansion team.
They were granted an additional 24hr access to free agents.
They had a full year to negotiate side deals and accumulate picks to acquire or not acquire players.
They had earlier access to exposed lists than anyone ever has.

They weren't snatching up number one goalies or top 3 forwards, or top two defensemen. Nobody looked at their lineup before the season and thought western conference champs.
They were billed as a competative team, but most didn't have them in the playoffs.
There was no reason for them to be better than established teams that could all protect their stars and their prospects. Except that a lot of established teams were very poorly constructed, and could probably have built a better team for themselves using a mulligan on their entire rosters.

When is the last time a first time team was stacked and in first place. I mean they got tons of draft picks as well. Joke

James Neal, Jonathan Marchessault, David Perron all had strong resumes coming in.
William Karlsson, Alex Tuch, Shea Theodore were all guys many teams would love to have had even before the X-draft.
Nobody expected them to have this success. But is undeniable they were set up for it better than any X-team ever has been.

Of coarse they were... its a ****ing joke
Who expected Karlsson to score 40, or have 4 players in the 60-75 point range when the season ends .
Tuch , JM and Theodore were acquired cause teams poorly assessed their talent or failed to get ahead of the curve years ago fixing their roster.
Teams got stuck with too many cumbersome contracts and Vegas was more than willing to absorb salary and or term at a price.
I don't think they were gifted wrapped anything , they simply took advantage of the situation .
Half this roster is gone in 2 years, and won't be shocked if they slip a bit next year .

All the guys you mention were available to any team in the league that was willing to put them on their protection list. Nothing prevented us for trading for Beal or Marchesseault and protecting them instead of Shaw. We didn't, neither did any other teams. That's on us, I'm sure the Preds or Panthers would have rather had something for those guys instead of losing them for nothing. Especially Florida who protected way worse players than Marchesseault. They ****ed up. The expansion rules were fair. Teams of the past got a raw deal, I thought this time was done right.

I mean we lost Emelin of all people. A guy that most were happy to get rid of. Most teams lost similar players. Plus a few good ones.

Excellent post GW. And now with expansion probably 3 years away teams need to start looking down the road so you don't throw away Theodore or Tuch cause you have to many bad contracts or don't hand out too many no trade clauses.
