Tankin' for Dahlin won't change anythin', we've become the Canucks of the East

Both Alzner and McCarron are players who were prototypical in the pre-obstruction penalty NHL. Unfortunately for them the game just keeps getting faster and they can't keep up. Alzner at least broke in at a time when his style was still in use. McCarron was born about a decade or so too late. If the Habs knew how to properly develop prospects they'd ensure that McCarron was given some power skating lessons because his lack of skating ability is pretty much the only thing preventing him from earning an NHL paycheque. You can't teach size but you can teach skating. McCarron has all the raw material if only the Habs would do the work involved in mining it.

Alzner, at this point in his career, is what he is. A good guy to have during a playoff run when the refs put away their whistles and allow more clutching and grabbing but you have to get to the playoffs first.

Nah. He's not good for a playoff run either.

They said the same thing about Hal Gill. Slow-moving leviathans like Alzner (in certain situations) can come in handy in a playoff run. But that shouldn't translate into a 5 year deal at the kind of money he's being paid. At that price you should have a more mobile and versatile player than Alzner. Getting him as an expensive UFA addition is like picking out wallpaper for a house that you haven't poured a foundation for yet. It's a classic "cart before the horse" move. You secure a playoff spot and then you add an Alzner at the deadline as depth. You don't make him your big off-season signing.

So....the problem wasn't corrected. All they did was change the name of the problem from "Ferguson" to "Burke". In fact, the problem got worse. JFJ actually made the playoffs once during his 5 years in charge. Burke never made it to the post-season even once during his tenure. Then he was replaced by Nonis, who was worse still, although not as irritating on a human level as Burke (but then again, who isn't less annoying than Burke? Two decades in an executive role and to this day he still doesn't know how to tie a Windsor knot)

The Leafs stumbled into competence more than anything they did by design. Maybe we'll get lucky someday and the Habs will accidentally hire a competent GM.

Nice to see Burke and his Flames burning in hell now. Coach will be fired and their first pick goes to the Isles.

Maybe that fat pig gets the boot as well. Talented roster but they give up too many scoring chances and they deserve it .

Technically he's not the GM.

With all due respect to the OP, the lower we finish in the standings, the better the odds that we draft a better player, which, all things being equal, increase our chances our chances of improving. I expect the OP to respond that all things are NOT equal, but that's not how assumptions typically work.

From The Athletic, on Melnyk's Good Bad & Ugly column re: Michael McCarron:

Michael McCarron: Fights happen when he’s on the ice. Anything else? It was kind of sad to hear Sergio Momesso tell us on the air prior to the game that he had a long talk with McCarron after the morning skate and that McCarron felt kind of “lost” and was appreciative that he had “somebody to talk to.”

Pathetic.
