I think he was just spitballing ideas, rather than basing that on any concrete info.
But Panarin would make one hell of a one year rental.

Outstanding idea if the trade price is right. We have a bunch of bodies that should have decent value that we're not going to be able to afford in a few years anyway. For example, Johnsson signing for the QO kind of signals that whatever multi year deal was put in front of him wasn't enough coin. I think that pretty shortly our secondary level players are going to learn that if they want to stay in Toronto, they'll have to play ball and give up some money to stay during their RFA years. Turning down a longer term, team friendly deal is going to be a good way to find yourself traded to a place like Columbus.

A couple of minor front-office notes from the past couple of days:
Lindsay Hofford, who was Mark Hunter's director of amateur scouting in London and then was subsequently hired by Hunter to be the Leafs' director of Eastern scouting has been hired by the Arizona Coyotes to be their assistant GM and Director of amateur scouting. Not exactly a surprising move, considering how tight he was with Hunter and that he's leaving for a promotion.
Lou has also hired away the Marlies' goaltending coach of the last number of years, Piero Greco. He's now the Islanders' goalie coach.
