Rumor of Tavares fiance taking a big promotion at a Toronto hospital.

If true that would likely play a big factor.

Like Thornton, Pleks' offense has fallen to not really even 3rd line levels now, but he does still hold his own against 2nd line competition.

I find that pretty interesting. I don't think it guarantees anything, but you'd think that is a factor, especially for couple planning to get married.

Nothing concrete about it. Some are saying she took the position a while ago and he sets up shop in TO in the off season so who knows if its legit

I'd take Plekanec back for cheap on the 4th line. And cheap i mean ~1.5 million max. I hated the turtleneck and would prefer someone better but if we are signing Tavares than i wouldn't mind PLeks as a cheap option.

Sign Tavares. Hopefully this fiance getting a promotion is a real thing and it sways his decision in our favor. 7x10 lets go. Leave some cap money on the table but get a few more million per season in endorsements.

Pierre LeBrun
Confirmed teams that John Tavares will meet with this week at CAA offices in LA: Dallas, Boston, San Jose, Toronto, Tampa (plus of course NYI). The Tavares camp will also have conversations with 2-3 other teams over the phone and perhaps meet with 1-2 of them.

Of course Tampa and Boston.

Stamkos, by all accounts, was put off by Toronto’s over-the-top presentation and pretty much right after that one phoned Tampa Bay to say ‘let’s make a deal.’ Whereas it’s long been believed that the Sharks would have been Stamkos’ pick had he decided to leave the Lightning, and in fact, as I’ve speculated before, San Jose and Tampa would have been ready to do a sign-and-trade, too, to get Stamkos the eight years in San Jose and get the Lightning some compensation in return.

The Leafs have learned from that Stamkos experience and a source indicated over the weekend they would have a more low-key approach in the Tavares pitch. And surely, the actual Leafs of today on the ice compared to two years ago makes for a better sell.

Then you read this which would put over the top as an understatement

Really don’t think they plan to do that, not with Matthews surely having the expectation. Maybe if Matthews was signed already.

Though I kinda would prefer Tavares as the captain personally.

Tavares if signed, and wants the captaincy ... go for it.
I would have given it to reilly and may be even kadri before matthews.

Leafs extend qualifying offers to Andreas Johnsson, William Nylander, Justin Holl, Freddie Gauthier, Miro Aaltonen & Martin Marincin.

Ugh to the fact that they bothered to qualify Marincin.

Nah, these are just rumours. I can't see Captaincy being a big appeal to Tavares, and I also can't see the Leafs potentially offering the C to Tavares and upsetting Matthews in the process. Matthews is the will always be the top dog here.

Marincin doesn't surprise me ... they probably see him as a AHL D who can take care of emergency call-up to the big league if need be. He has values in that role.

But I'm a little surprise Gauthier got qualified too ... I guess the fact we're short on C depth plays a role here.
