Leafs sign John Tavares to 7 year/ $77m deal

nobody likes to hear this but the signing also opens up the ability for the team to trade one of kadri, nylander or marner if that's the price required to get an elite D, without impacting the ofense.

We just signed Jooris for 1 year, $600,000 or so so that about equals the money that went out.

Pumped about the signing. We have the best centre depth in the league and we're going it for it in the next few years.
Hearing on local radio it's virtually ALL bonus money on JT. So no cap hit to speak of?
Whoa. 15 schmil signing bonus, $900,000 salary according to Mirtle and co. NICE.

Per @PierreVLeBrun, Tavares contract: Yr 1, $650k salary, $15.25M sb; Yr 2, $910k salary, $15.25M sb; Yr 3, $910k salary, $11.09M sb; Yr 4, $910k salary, $8.44M sb; Yrs 5-7, $910k salary, $7.04M sb in each of those years. Total $70M of the deal is signing bonus. #SportsBox #NHL

And the leafs are one of the few teams that could do that type of deal and not even flinch. Especially on the day that the ACC is being changed to SBA...15.25M is literally pocket change.

What does this do??

Lebrun
Tavares contract breakdown: Year 1, $650k salary, $15.25M sb; Year 2, $910k salary, $15.25M sb; Year 3, $910k salary, $11.09M sb; Year 4, $910k salary, $8.44M sb; Years 5-7, $910k salary, $7.04M sb in each of those years.

Just gives him money upfront

It definitely makes him tradeable if his 30's aren't kind to him. That is mother****ing buy out proof though.

Nobody should like to hear this. Trading cheaper players who are either better offensively (Marner & Nylander) or almost as good offensively and less than half the cost (Kadri) is a terrible idea.

If that's the plan to improve the blueline, it's a bad plan.

Congrats on the signing. Hopefully zeke is right that you'll regret it a little, but for now you should be able to enjoy it. Gonna be a tough team to line up against.

Not if you're trading Kadri to a cap crunched team that will pay a premium for the deal. There's obvious value having a guy like that on your roster, but it can also provide equally important trade value.

ignoring the fact that you're conveniently pretending that p/60 is somehow more important than actual production, in terms of allocation of resources they just added JT without sacrificing any resources.

JT + #1 dman >> nylander + secondary assets taking up JT's cap space

anyways, the leafs just added a ppg centre; the first premiere in his prime free agent to jump teams in forever.

awesome day for the leafs.

if you can't enjoy this then maybe it's time to step away from the keyboard for a bit.

The reason i ask is why not do the one year contract this year with willy say 13 million this year and on january sign him to a 6 year contract for 6 mil a season. Totals 49 for both but it brongs down the cap hit for the other 6 seasons

That's not how it works.

Sign willy to a 1 year deal this year for 13 mil and in january sign him for 5.7 deal for 6 years. figures out to almost 7 mil a season and keeps the cap hit down some over the next 6 years

Saw somewhere that Tavares didn't want that. You can't sign the extension until January, then any offers like that would definitely get investigated. And he'd lose the certainty - maybe he gets hurt in the first half of the year, or maybe Toronto changes their mind and doesn't want to do the 2nd part of the deal. Etc... Sometimes guys just want to sign the big deal once and not have to worry about it, answering questions all year about when he's signing an extension, having that be the topic of conversation that comes up, having people wonder why he's not putting up "15M production" this year, or whatever. Take your money and comfortably retire at home.

*Oh, never mind, you were talking about Nylander? Yeah, that won't work, since you sign him for 13M this year, means he can hold out for a 13M qualifying offer for next year. So just because you have a handshake to give him a long deal, maybe he changes his mind in January and decides not to sign "part 2" of the deal. Never mind for a guy like him, as I mentioned for Tavares, if he gets hurt the first half then the team is under no pressure to give him that second deal.

It does which is why the "Spend it on D instead" comments are infuriating.

Part of the pitch was having a 1-2 combo of Matthews Willy and Tavares Marner and making the cap work to keep it that way as per Bobo

I think were safe despite everyone's wishes of us losing one of the kids
