2018-19 Miscellaneous News Thread

saw on twitter in college hockey BC and BU are combined 0-8 and both got blown out at home over the weekend. They are both normally good teams from what I recall.

2nd year in a row with shoulder problems. I hate that trend for the young man. Shoulder problems can be difficult to fully shake ... says the voice of sad experience.

It's his second since joining TO, but it's the third in his career-- he reportedly injured that shoulder in juniors.

from twitter:

The NHL has decided to dive head-first into the sports betting business. Official partnership(s) to be announced at a Monday morning press conference in New York. Word I'm hearing is "we're going all in."

not a shock since the NHL has the least money of the 4 major sports

The League is partnering with MGM. No word on how much money is involved. MGM Resorts is already an official NHL partner. MGM Resorts owns 42.5% of T-Mobile Areana and operate it.

I know next to nothing about gambling or betting but looks like 'dirty money' to me. If professional sports are getting into this Pete Rose should be a shoo-in for the HoF! My wife on the other hand...

At the big newspaper production inthe Vegas some years ago, her company gave the gals on the sales team $100 just to gamble with; Barb put dollar into a slot machine and immediately won another $100. Considering the odds would be against her further she figured she might as well pocket her $199 'profit' and spent it on something usable like a new pair of shoes to go with the 100 or so she already had. Well the first part of the story is mostly accurate anyway - if I forget the details.

Tight end to my right got pancaked onto my right shoulder as I was prone after being pancaked in 8th grade. Could never throw properly after that and it still hurts 42 years later. But he probably went to see doctors.

I don't have a moral objection to the gambling thing; I just think it's a dumbass way to piss away one's money.

making gamble legal is like making pot legal, they might as well profit off something people are doing anyway. I figure the Cherokee casinos in the mountains will eventually have sports books if NC makes it legal.

For those in the know, realistically, how far off is this state from having a true up and running sports book operation? Is it only a year or two away or will NC lag behind for years to come? The revenue stream would seem like it's crazy to pass up for the state overall.

Don't see a NC sports book any time soon . It took a long time to get the NC lottery. The Cherokees have to ask the state for approval of a sports book so it's up to them to ask. I'm sure the local ACC schools would not OK a Triangle or Charlotte based sports book and they do have a lot of political clout, they played a big role in getting rid of HB2. They could compromise by not allowing bets on the local teams.

Not to get TOO political, but you asked a direct question and the answer is largely political, so I'll keep it to observation and limit the editorial content ...

Bottom line ... not until we get a new General Assembly. The Governor's office is weak as water in this State and the GA makes all those kinds of changes happen. We finally got the lottery when the Republicans decided it was good enough for the State revenue stream to justify their long held moral objections to lotteries. I know the Dems got the "blame" for the shenanigans that put the lottery in place, but it would never have happened without the other side of the aisle finally playing along. Now that the GOP firmly controls the GA, you're not going to get anywhere with actual gambling in the State without their agreement. And given the current leadership, that's just a non-starter. Maybe the Cherokees get thrown a very limited, watered down bone on a sports book ... maybe. But that's going to be it. Without the GA playing along, that's all that's going to happen.

Jonathan Quick is out indefinitely after having surgery to repair a torn meniscus. Landing spot for Mrazek or McElhinney?

Until Darling really proves he's going to be able to at least split time in the net without breaking down I seriously doubt that Mrazek is going anywhere. He and McIlhenney are about on par, but Mrazek is far more likely to be able to handle the load should Darling struggle.

Darling did not looked very good letting a goal through him from the corner, and going way out of position, Kidd style, on another. I guess I will give him a pass since it was his first NHL game this year but the latter goal sucked the life out of the building and team.
