The Islanders make their 2nd visit to Raleigh.

The Canes opened the season by losing to the Islanders in OT. Since then, they’re 6-3, including a 4-3 shootout win over the Sharks on Friday. That game also featured the worst period that the Canes have played all season, followed by 45 minutes of entertaining hockey. Aho is on a 10 game scoring streak; a point today will tie the club record to start the season, held by Ron Francis. Special teams continue to haunt the team, they are DFL on the PK after allowing 2 goals on 3 chances on Friday. The PP was 0-2 and is 27th. No lineup changes are expected but coach RBA didn’t commit on a starting goalie at yesterday’s practice.

Since their opening night win, the Isles have scuffled along at 3-4-1. But in their 3 wins, they’ve outscored their opponents 17-3, including yesterday afternoon’s dismantling of the Flyers 6-1. Lehner was in goal so expect Thomas Greiss again. Mathew Barzal leads with 9 assists and 10 points. Brock Nelson has 5 goals including 2 last night. Greiss is 1-2 with a 2.60/.918 stat line. They’re 15th on the PP at 23.1% and 17th on the kill.

After a couple of dreary days, it looks like a good day for a tailgate. South Plaza Party starts at 3. Fox Sports Carolinas for TV.

Special teams are pathetic. No effort. Stick poke checks all night. Sloppy passing leading to dozens of turnovers. Not impressed with 3 of the 4 lines. Something has go give.

Staal, Will, Fog, is a great 3rd line. Now we need a 2nd line that can score.

Yup. First line is paying the bills, Staal's line is doing their job (which is primarily defensive in nature) and the support scoring really needs to step it up in these games against plodding defensive minded opponents when you need a bit of a boost. Thus far this season, that's been a real issue. I mean, no great shock there. We're short on options at center that would bring any real offensive presence to that line and the wingers are either children or grinders or both. Scoring depth was always going to be a problem for this team, especially if the D isn't pitching in a few goals here and there ... and they really haven't been doing that very much early on.

Meh. It's a small sample size yet, so there's no reason to panic. There's plenty of reason to be concerned however.
