Re: 2012 Draft... who do you want?
Oh, I definitely agree, a lot of things can change in a year. Take Nick Ebert. Last summer, he was widely considered the second or third best d-man available for this draft. It would be an absolutely shocker if he was picked in the first round come June. Like Esposito with Radulov, he was the product of playing with an elite player in Ryan Ellis. Once they left, suddenly they weren't nearly as good as previously believed.
Like with those two, it'll be interesting so see how Sean Monahan plays next season without Tyler Toffoli and possibly without Shane Prince on his team. There's some speculation that Seth Jones will be headed to the CHL next season, interested in seeing how he'd play against OHL'ers (I think he'd be in the OHL, not sure). Hunter Shinkaruk won't have Emerson Etem to play with next season, wondering how he'll answer to that challenge.
The progression/regression of prospects is really the funnest part about watching them. It's really enjoyable to watch how they do over just a year's time.
I'll just add that if Tavares had had the fortunate of playing with a better, more established supporting cast in his first few years, he'd have gotten much better results.
I agree with everything you say....
However, i've been very hesitant through the years to believe all the hype about prospects....remember when Tavares was 16 and people were saying he's the next superstar that will burn the league...well he's a great player, but he's not ''Crosby'' or ''Malkin'' great....remember how people were salivating at Esposito and were saying he's a sure top pick...by his second junior season he dropped in the rankings...I remember people saying Kessel is a no-brainer top pick.....his stock dropped from January to June draft day...he got picked 5th finally...
I agree that McKinnon is said to be a ''sure'' future superstar, but i'll wait until he completes his junior years before saying he's the next big thing
The funniest thing in all this is that people were overlooking the 2007 draft saying it was weak compared to the 2008 one (Tavares)....Some even said that Tampa would have been better to suck the following year to get Tavares instead of this year and get Stamkos
The 2007 draft was ended up being one of the best top 10 in recent years....Stamkos and all those stud dmen....sometimes you can't overlook a draft because people say it's a weak one
